Although this group is long defunct, its one major recording will be fondly remembered for years--if not decades--to come. The Heroes consisted of rapper Michael Franti and percussionist Ron Tse; together, the San Francisco Bay area-based duo created a biting, politically savvy record that touched on both personal vulnerability and governmental venality. Franti used the microphone to preach about injustice, homophobia, materialism, and apathy. Although Public Enemy had long before established hip-hop's political potential, they never quite attained Franti's ability to translate black rage into universal themes. In the Heroes' best number, "Television, the Drug of the Nation," Franti raps, "Imagination is sucked out of our children by a cathode ray nipple / Television is the only wet-nurse that would create a cripple." Unfortunately, after extensive touring, the pair went their separate ways, Tse to a variety of solo projects and Franti to Spearhead. --Martin Johnson

個人的に90年代後半のMichael Franti & Spearheadから聞き始めたのですが、「Michael Frantiが好きなら絶対聞いた方が良いよ」というお勧めもあり、こちらも購入。Bassにかの復弦ギタリストCharlie Hunterもクレジットされておりますが、ギターでの演奏は控えめな印象、タイトル曲での唸るベースラインは秀逸です。フロアを躍らせるダンスミュージック的なFunk要素は薄く、パーソナルな世界観かと思いました。2年後には生音を取り入れながらSpeaheadへと移行していきます。

来たよマイケル・フランティ！
去年のフジロックは見れなかったけど、愛してるぜー。
彼の放つポリティカルなメッセージばかりが取り上げられがちで
（もちろんそれも素晴らしいことだけれど）、音についての考察が
されてなかったりするけれど、
彼の作り出す音はHIPHOPに留まらない、懐の深さを感じさせてくれる。
spearheadとしての現在の活動ももちろん、
この頃の、ハードな闘う男丸出しの音も、ナカナカ素敵です。
うん、大好き。

I remember seeing these guys on "The Word" Channel 4's late night music show back in the 90's and they blew me away with their cover of the DK's "California Uber Alles", straight out the next week and bought the lp. Good old 6Music played a track the other week and I got straight onto Amazon to get it on cd as I'd flogged all my vinyl years ago. Television was and still is the stand out track, awesome then, awesome now....go and buy it!

Die Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - bestehend aus Michael Franti (Text/Rap) und Rono Tse (Music/Scratches) - erschafften mit Ihrem Debüt Album "Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury" 1992 einen Underground Hit, der trotz seiner unbestrittenen Qualitäten nie einen großen kommerziellen Erfolg feiern konnte. Musikalisch liefert das Duo hier ein reinrassiges Hip Hop Album ab, dessen musikalische Untermalung sich vor allem auf wilde Samplings samt diverser Noise-Elemente, Scratches und die Verschmelzung verschiedener Musikrichtungen stützt um einen einmaligen, unverkennbaren Sound zu entwickeln. Dies kann ungewohnte, teils sogar "nervige" Auszüge annehmen, gibt dem Album aber eine ganz eigene Klasse bei dem sich einem jedes Lied als neuer, ganz eigener Klanggenuß präsentiert und dem Album somit eine ungeheure Vielseitigkeit verpaßt, die einen immer wieder aufs neue verblüfft. Abgerundet wird das ganze von erstklassigen Lyriks. Michael Franti legt den Finger in gesellschaftliche Wunden wie man es sonst nur von schwarzen Polirappern ala "Public Enemy" oder "Paris" kennt. Schonungslos prasseln einem auf dem gesamten Album gesellschafts-, sozialkritische oder politische Texte um die Ohren, welche nicht nur auf Phrasen verweisen, sondern dem Zuhörer auf äußerst intelligente weise serviert werden. Mein persönlicher Favorit des Albums ist dabei ganz klar "Language of Violence", welcher für mich am besten die perfekte Symbiose zwischen Musik und Text darstellt, da mir sowohl der düstere, industriell wirkende Sound, als auch die schonungslosen und wirklich hervorragenden Textzeilen ungemein zusagen. Weitere Anspieltipps sind "Famous and Dandy", "Television the Drug of the Nation" - hier gefällt mir besonders die Stelle "...most people think Central Amerika means Kansas...", sowie "Califonia über alles", wobei das gesamte Album einen starken Eindruck hinterläßt.

Mein Fazit: 5 Sterne für ein Underground Highlight, das leider jedoch das einzige Album der Band bleibt. Wer sich auf den - für ein Hip Hop Album - manchmal doch recht ungewöhnliche musikalische Kollage einläßt und bereit ist musikalisch etwas über den Horizont des typischen Hip Hop Sound hinweg zu sehnen, bekommt sowohl textlich, als auch soundmäßig ein ganz starkes Album abgeliefert. Underground ja, aber da eine echte Perle.

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy are anything but disposable. With social commentary that cuts to the core of modern ills, they expose our disposable culture for what it is, pointing out hypocrisy at every turn. The band instantly evokes memories of other great Hip-Hop bands that have combined socio-political poetry with Jazz-influenced riffs: bands like Arrested Development and Digable Planets.
Listenable, yet demanding, the Heroes deliver melody and musically complex arrangements. Samples are used liberally, with synths providing a techno background for their funk. When the band reincarnated as Spearhead, the synth player/co-writer was missing from the lineup. That was a loss as this album proves. Nevertheless, Spearhead is also worth a listen, especially if you like the Heroes.
Sadly, the Disposable Heroes never got the recognition they deserved, putting out just this one album to my knowledge. It's one of my Top 5 Hip-Hop favorites of all time. Check it out.

I had owned Spare Ass Annie for years, and since these guys were the core back up for Uncle Bill, when I saw this disk, I had to check it out. Cerebral, topical rap lyrics with some interesting instrumentation here and there. If you like Michael, rap and thinking, this is for you.

If you're even thinking about getting this album you should just buy it because you won't be disappointed. I decided to get this album because of how much I liked the Spearhead albums and I may even like this better. Phat grooves and SMART words that make you think! Wish I could say that's something you find all the time in music today, but it just isn't. Even though the album's a couple/few years old, it remains sharp and relevant and the sound will pull you in and pump you up all at the same time. Why are you still reading this? Go get it! :)
