Former child actor Van Dyke Parks had reinvented himself as a songwriter, arranger, raconteur, and budding conceptualist when Warner Bros. bankrolled this brave, baroque 1968 debut, which has achieved true notoriety in the annals of '60s California pop. More heard-of than heard, Song Cycle sailed against the tide of guitar-driven, blues-drenched rock to bet on the orchestral ambitions of Sgt. Pepper, weaving a conceptual tapestry from folk, Tin Pan Alley, and classical strands. In place of generational anthems or confessional love songs, Parks's coy, modest tenor offered intricate, impressionistic wordplay ripe with puns, multiple-entendres, and geopolitical allusions far beyond the pale of countercultural rock. On songs such as "The All Golden," "Palm Desert," and "Laurel Canyon Blvd.," you'll hear poetic links to Brian Wilson's most convoluted, internalized soundscapes, as well as a wily musical intelligence that will either intoxicate or infuriate you. 　いわずと知れたアメリカ音楽のランドスケープ的名盤のUK Ryko99年リマスター版です。
以前出ていたWEA版は一部の曲で楽器やボーカルのレベルがいきなり変わるなど小さな制作時の事故のような物が聴かれましたが、こちらではそれが改善されています。またダイナミックレンジを活かした丁寧なリマスタリングが行われていて、非常に聴き心地の良い音になっています。
ボーナストラックとしてシングルから The Eagle and Meが収録されています。

メロディーは甘ったるいが、言葉はキツイ。1曲目Vine Streetの作者Randy Newman同様Popな英国系音楽といえますが、音はやはりアメリカンですね。後にBrian Wilsonとのコラボレーションもありますが、Beach Boysファンは気に入るのでは？10CCが好きな人にも良いかも。でも、一番近いのはやっぱりRandyかな？2ndの「Discover America」ではがらっと変わってカリプソですが、1973年には両アルバムとも良く聴きました。歌詞を気にせずにメロディーだけ流しておけば、両方とも良いBGMになりますよ。

Glad to see this album re-issued, such an interesting and uncompromising album, unconventionally arranged classical and baroque pop collide and get infused with other sounds. Van's voice is also very charming and adds a very particular charm to it all. The album took a few listens to truly "get in-to" it but once it sinks it teeth in you'll fall in love. It's an unknown masterpiece, shame the track "The Eagle & Me" is not here, very good track as well. This album must have sounded quite alien at the time of it's release, ahead of it's time this one.

Song Cycle is a brilliant and visionary slice of Americana incorporating influences as diverse as Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Stephen Foster, American folk music, and Vaudeville. Actually, since Copland and Ives also incorporated the other influences into their music, it isn't incongruous at all. Writing, singing, playing, and arranging, Parks created this gem of an album when he was a 22-year-old wunderkind. Warner Brothers Records recognized his genius and had high hopes for this amazing album, but it was just too far off the beaten path to be commercially viable even in the highly experimental year of 1968. It is almost defiantly uncommercial and may take a few listenings to click, but once you get what's going on, it rewards many repeated listenings. It is a masterpiece but it's not for every taste. Those who like to stick to music that plays it safe and doesn't challenge the listener are not likely to understand it, but for adventurous listeners, it has a timeless quality, and the only way it has "dated" is that so few popular artists today are this creative.

Song Cycle is perhaps the greatest 'work' of truly American music ever written. That being said, most people love it or hate it. It has wonderful melodies that cycle from one song to the next, but is the internal rhyme schemes that captivate me. Example: in "The All Golden" one line about military service, "...one, two, three, four.." next rhymes with "..wend to sea for..", " Just suppose a youngster knows" is followed with " Juxtaposed to B.B. D. and O.". Great lines like the double-entendre of "Dreams are still born in Hollywood" occur throughout: there are dozens of these gems in the lyrics. It is an album to live with. Play it in the background and let it draw you in. When I bought this album in the late sixties I was able to write to warner Bros. for the lyrics, since lost in a house fire, but I believe they were autographed by VanDyke himself: I hope they are included with the CD.
