Always out of place, the Flamin Groovies were almost always great. When San Francisco was drowning in late-'60s hippie excess, the Groovies responded with tight, riff-heavy pop songs such as "Teenage Head" and "High-Flyin' Baby." Predictably enough, not too many people noticed. So what do the Groovies do? They move to England, transform themselves into a hard-rocking, jangly merseybeat outfit, and release the critically acclaimed Shake Some Action. The year was 1976, a period better known for punk than for retro-pop. Oh well and too bad for the Groovies, but not so bad for us, as this collection demonstrates. With should-have-been hits like "You Tore Me Down" and "Slow Death," Groovies' Greatest Grooves is the perfect introduction to San Francisco's most accomplished misfits. --Percy Keegan

アメリカンロックの裏番長。彼らの事を「Ｂ級バンド」と呼ぶ輩がいるが、今までに発売された作品の多さや、２１世紀になった今でも新たにベストが発売されるのは本物である証拠。彼らの曲は時には激しく、時には愉快に、時には切なく等、色んな面があり、ずっと聴いていても飽きない。

センスが良くって、影響力も強いってことでしょう。とにかくあのバンドのあの曲がこんなところにあるとはびっくりしました。そのほかにも、どっかで聞いたことのあるイントロとか、フレーズがいっぱい出てきて楽しい。全然悪気はなくて、お互いリスペクト以外の何物でもない。そういう仲間感覚が魅力です。まったくノーマークでしたが、Dr.FeelgoodやKinksなんかと同じ感覚で聴ける掘り出し物を見つけました。
ただ、音質の向上する後期より、衝動が先走る初期のほうが楽曲的には面白いかと思うので、全部を一枚に収めるのは少し無理があるかもしれません。意外と歴史の長いバンドなんですね。

Très belle compilation, complète et cohérente, pour retracer la longue histoire de ce groupe « maudit », qui ne connut jamais le succès auquel il aurait pu -dû- prétendre ! S’il ne fallait qu’un seul disque consacré aux Flamin’Groovies dans votre discothèque, ce serait celui-ci !

If, like me, you are a fan of quality "power pop" (i.e., Badfinger, The Cars, Paul Revere and the Raiders) then this Flamin' Groovies collection is a must-hear album. With or without Roy Loney, these guys knew how to play good time music. Songs like "Yeah My Baby," "Shake Some Action," "Don't You Lie to Me" are great sixties style pop rock. One of the advantages of being a Baby Boomer is that even for bands that never made it big, but who made quality music, there are enough fans out there that albums like this remain in print. It ain't heavy, but it does kick.

I first heard of the Flamin Groovies when the legendary ‘Shake Some Action’ appeared on a punk compilation album in the early 80’s and I was hooked from then on. I was amazed at the wide diversity of the Flamin Groovies sound and energy. This is the only rock‘n’roll band I know who dared to sound like the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Stones, pull it all off successfully and not take themselves too seriously. ‘The Groovies' Greatest Grooves’ is a masterpiece not to be missed and captures the essences of the Flamin Groovies – ‘The Unsung Heroes of Rock’n’Roll’.
