Lewis Taylor began musical life playing in The Edgar Broughton Band, an unlikely apprenticeship for the work he produces here. Lewis Taylor is the greatest Marvin Gaye record never made; he's got Gaye's passionate, creamy inflections down pat, even simulating his hurt macho pride on "Lucky" and "Right". Yet this is more than a formidable exercise in soul replication for 1970s nostalgists; Taylor brings to this record a prowess as a multi-instrumentalist and a highly eclectic musical sensibility. Shades of The Beach Boys, Joe Meek and Pigeonhed, prog rock and psychedelia are present here, as Taylor's songs sweep up to dark crescendoes, as on "Damn", which dissolves in a squall of heavy metal guitar. Taylor suffered commercially because programmers and punters didn't quite know what to make of him or where he was coming from; the secret is to stop trying to figure it out and just enjoy. --David Stubbs

この人はもっとたくさんの人に聞かれてほしい。
一部の人にしか聞かれていないのが本当にもったいない。
極上のメロディーと、何回聞いても飽きない複雑な曲構成。
特にこのファースト・アルバムと、セカンド・アルバムがすごい。
この人がすごいのは、単に黒人ソウルのモノマネにならずに、この人にしか作れない独特な曲を作ってるとこ。唯一無二。
わりと新しめのソウル・ミュージックではVOODOOと肩を並べるレベルの超名盤。

ハドソンヤング／クリスブレイドとともに『白人による黒人音楽解釈のものすごく成功している典型的なサンプル』
それもかなりセンスよくまとめあげているんで、やばいかもこれ。売れないんすよね。ミュージシャン受けはいいだろね、やたら。でも一般の人が聴いてくれないと『契約切られちゃうんだよね～～～』厳しいのよね、現実は。
トッドラングレンに似たなにかつまり『自分の音世界の深いところを見せつけてしまう』姿勢。ここがいいんだけど大衆受けはしないんだよね。
でも俺はかなりこのひと好きです。ソウルとＲ＆Ｂに惚れ込んでこんな音楽を作り上げてしまうんだから。最高です。
売れ線タイプの曲はないと思いますね。ぜんぜんね。センスがとんがってて、かっとんでいるんでね。ダリルホー!!!ルにも近いなにかを持っているという感じですか。
自分独自の『美学を持って』いてそれを展開しているって言う感じで、全体的には磨き抜かれたメロディーと熱い情熱がほとばしり出ている。
そんなところに惚れましたね。ビザールなブルーアイドソウルだとしときましょうね。

Don’t know how I managed to sleep on this one back in the day, but I got saved from further ignorance by a Pitchfork review a little while back. I haven’t felt so enthralled by an album in a long time. It’s as if Marvin Gaye had a really talented nephew who made a record. Also hear a little Shuggie Otis in there alongside the usual suspects. The remastering and pressing quality are very good, and it’s currently one of my favorite vinyl experiences, and never far from my turntable. Highest recommendation for lovers of Soul/neoSoul music, and vinyl lovers too.

J’ai rarement aimée et écoutée un album en boucle comme celui-ci! A chaque écoute c’est une nouvelle expérience! Tout fan de Neo-soul se doit d’avoir cet album! Non seulement il défi les lois du temps (cet album est sorti il y a plus de 20 ans pourtant certains morceaux auraient pu sortir cette année on ne se serait pas posés la question), Lewis Taylor est la définition même de « artiste sous-côtés », bien qu’il ait été loué par les loués par les critiques. Et le peu de personnes qui le connaissent apprécient sa musique.
J’achèterai sans aucun doute ses autres albums.
(J’ai acheté le mien de seconde main ce qui explique les fissures)

Es ist ein Verlust dass Lewis Taylor sich aus dem Musikgeschäft verabschiedet hat. Seine soulige und wunderbare Stimme hätte noch vieles bieten können. Dass man jedes Wort versteht birgt eine hohe Qualität wie man es bei früheren Sängern und Schauspielern kannte. Vielleicht muss man ein Romantiker sein um seine Musik zu schätzen, leider gibt es, ausser Lewis II, nichts mehr davon. Ich wüsste so gerne wo er steckt und was er jetzt macht.
