７６年発表の編集盤。スプーキー・トゥースは６７年から７４年の間に７枚のアルバムを発表。本作はグループ解散後に発表された編集盤でデビュー・アルバムの『It's All About』から１．３．の２曲、セカンド『Spooky Two』から２．４．６．７．から４曲。４作目の『The Last Puff』から５．８．の２曲、５作目で再結成第一弾の『You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw』から９．１１．、６作目の『Witness』から１０．１１．の２曲。そこに６８年のシングル１３．を加えた全１３曲を収録している。ピエール・アンリとの共演盤『Ceremony』、そしてゲイリー・ライト(k、vo)、ミック・ジョーンズ(g、vo)、マイク・パトゥ(vo、p)、ブライソン・グレアム(dr)、ヴァル・ムーア(b) という布陣のラスト・アルバム『The Mirrer』からの選曲はない。
通して聞くとかなり雑多な印象も受けまとまりに欠けるが、ブルースをベースにしたハード・ロックという点では一貫している。多数のメンバーの入れ代わりやそのメンバーが後に結成するグループの方向性を考えるとそれも止むなしと言うところか？後のグループやソロと比較すると磨かれる前の原石という感じは止むなしだが、この時代のグループとしては演奏／楽曲共に平均は超えている。ほぼ時系列に収録されているため徐々に洗練されてポップになっていく様子が面白い。

スプーキー・トゥースは、魅力を伝えるのが難しいグループのひとつです。ファルセットのゲイリー・ライトと、しゃがれ声のマイク・ハリスンの双頭ボーカル、ダブルキーボードが特徴。確かに初期2枚は、70年代初期のオルガン・ハードの流れに属します。ところが、4枚め以降はメンバーが流動化し、ふたりのリーダーも出たり入ったり。音楽はゴスペルやカントリーの匂いが強くなると同時に、新加入のギタリスト、ミック・ジョーンズの持つハードロック感覚が徐々に強まっていきました。このベストは、3枚め（フランスの現代音楽家とのコラボで、スプーキー単体とは見なせない。）と、レーベルの違うラスト作を除く、5枚のアルバムからの選曲です。

作品としては「スプーキー・トゥー」が有名でしょう。1、3がファースト、13が次いで出たシングル、2、4、6、7が「スプーキー・トゥー」から。「The Last Puff」「You Broke My Heart」「Witness」からは2曲づつの選曲ですが、ハードな曲が選ばれていないので、後期のハード感覚はいまひとつ分かりません。

わたしは、スプーキーの良さは、フリーに近いと思っています。ミドルテンポで、暑苦しくならず、それでいて適度にハード。アメリカのルーツ音楽から影響されていながら、ブリティッシュ特有の翳りのある音です。メンバーの技術も高くて、曲も外れがありません。安心感があります。逆に、「おっ」と驚くような展開は望めません。つくづく、渋好みのグループだと思います。このベストが気に入ったかたは、オリジナル作品が欲しくなると思います。

Une compilation qui replonge dans les années 70 ... Excellent album qui rassemble une très bonne sélection des morceaux du groupe ... Bien sur il faut d'abord aimer ce "son" des années 70 et bien sur on ne pouvait pas mettre tous les morceaux du groupe... Quelques uns regretteront certains morceaux de l'album "Spooky Two" mais c'est déjà a mon avis une très bonne compilation pour un prix très intéressant ...

So ganz kann ich den Titel ...Best of nicht teilen, es sind zwar so ein oder zwei wirklich bekannte Stücke von Spooky Tooth darauf, aber ich hatte mir mehr tatsächliche Best of's gewünscht. Die Qualität der Aufnahmen ist allerdings einwandfrei und die CD trägt zur Sammlung bei.

Have a home- recording of this CD already and the selections are a great cross-country section of the group's best they have to offer.l wore the old copy out so l' m buying a new copy. If you want to hear individual recordings my suggestion is "SpookyTwo"and " Last Puff" with a great rendition of Beatle's " I AM THE WALRUS" amoung others. Good Listening!!!

POP QUIZ...What does the following Rock Musicians, and Rock Superstars all have in Common...Greg Ridley ( later to play in SUPER GROUP HUMBLE PIE )... (Superstar.) Gary Wright...Chris Stainton ( in Joe Cocker's band THE GREASE BAND )...Mick Jones...and a house full of other talent passed through this band. They are long departed now. Far before their time in the mid to early SIXTIES. They were actually INSPIRATIONS to the likes of JIMMY PAGE, JEFF BECK, and a vast amount of other far YOUNGER British Rock stars. I must admit to not really knowing about spooky tooth only hearing about them from older people who were into mystical musical stuff which I was not up for at the time, even though I was living in London at the time I was still a mite young for the sounds they were putting out. I have finally caught up with them now at 61, and find they were great for the time, chord structures were a little short as compared to what was later pulled out of guitars however they were pioneers and managed to bring the clubs of London some great sound...Spigomars

I bought this because I once played in a band which played a few Spooky Tooth songs (they were contemporaneous if you get my drift). The record is a great reminder of how innovative they were at the time and what good players and singers they had (yes, they did get through a fair number of both). Though some of the songs are on the lengthy side, they don't get really tediously long like what a few other bands did back then! A great collection from a now little-remembered band - and at a bargain price!
