内容紹介
Distilling dub basslines, poignant lyrics and hip hop rhythms, Tricky has taken the Bristol-bred sound once known as trip hop beyond it's club roots, creating his own hybrid of pain, beauty and musical intensity. With this latest self-produced release, Tricky once again takes the listener through uncharted musical territory filled with potent strangeness and dope beats. Guest artists include Polly Jean Harvey and Scott Ian (Anthrax). 1st single: "Broken Homes"/"Money Greedy."
Amazonレビュー
What's really tricky is following up a debut as innovative and exquisite as 1995's Maxinquaye. Third time out (fourth if you count 1996's perplexing duets project Nearly God) and the artist formerly known as Adrian Thaws is still struggling to find the right balance of ambition and ability on Angels with Dirty Faces. The album has its moments: including a stirring collaboration with Polly Harvey on the bluesy "Broken Homes" and singer Martina Topley-Bird's eerie rendering of Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child" on "Carriage for Two." If you liked the claustrophobic mire of last year's Pre-Millennium Tension, Angels won't disappoint. Otherwise, you may find it a downer. --Aidin Vaziri

"Angels with Dirty Faces" represents, essentially, Tricky's last voyage down the rabbit hole. In this sense, it compiles most everything he had been working towards the several years prior. Drugged, hazy, unmistakably odd yet clearly focused, Angels glides around all the old corners with finesse and confidence yet it doesn't rehash or regurgitate anything that's already been said. It is not a redundant record (as it has been often criticized of being) but rather a further and excruciatingly thorough examination of the artist's soul via a medium that has been tried, tested, and perfected through several previous works. Due to this (as well as a good deal of slick beats and cool, smoky pseudo-blues rhythms), the record comes out with a good deal of strong material; the tense "6 Minutes", dizzy "Singin' the Blues", hazy and stumbling "Mellow", as well as the soul-bearing "Carriage for Two" which is accented with mournful guitar tones courtesy of Anthrax's Scott Ian. Despite this, only the break-beat-esque "Money Greedy" or the soulful "Broken Homes" (which boasts an admirable and excellent vocal performance by PJ Harvey) would makes for decent singles (which they apparently did so it seems) as the album lacks any real hooks or any sense of "catchiness". In saying this, it comes wrapped in a number of layers and can certainly require a number of listens to be fully appreciated (and to some, maybe this won't even be enough). Another interesting note on Angels is that it is also Tricky's last record done in collaboration with Martina-Topley Bird, part-time lover and full time muse for his overall musical and aesthetic, artistic vision. This is somewhat evident in her performance on the record: sultry and seductive as ever but oddly reluctant or distant, as if she were growing tired of or restless with the role to which she had become so accustomed. This creates a sense of tension not found on any of Tricky's previous outings nor can it be matched by anything he's done in over a decade sense (what could be described, subjectively of course, as a string of muddled and weak offerings perpetually attempting to capture the "magic" of his first LP). Following "Angels with Dirty Faces", Tricky would abandon his wild wanderings once and for all in favor of a much tamer sound, but if one were to consider this the last purist Tricky record, he could not have ended his vision on a better note.
*Thankfully this pressing of the album adds on "Peyote Sings" and "Taxi", both of which are two of Tricky's best songs and are essential to this record.
