Amazon
From shiny ubiquity to magnificent obscurity, the story of Talk Talk is one of a band slowly awakening to and fulfilling its artistic potential. Their early singles--like the eponymous "Talk Talk" (here featured in both demo and extended versions)--were glossy, overly-emphatic, and clearly indebted to the likes of Duran Duran. But this collection can't be dismissed as mere juvenilia, simply by virtue of the rapid progress it describes: from the austere euro-pop of "Such A Shame" and "Call In The Night Boy", to the magisterial poise of "Life's What You Make It" and "Living In Another World". The final, most remarkable stage of their development, however, is unchronicled here, for the simple reason that the music they would make in that period--the sprawling, diffuse Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock--was inimical to the format of the three-minute single. A valuable document. --Andrew McGuire

Talk Talk
特にセカンドアルバムIt's My Life は、名盤です。
80年代Talk Talk を押さえるには、It's My Life でいいような気がします。

The second disc is the B-sides and they start off a bit slowly, with demo versions of the songs we know from the first two albums, such as "Talk Talk", "Mirror Man", and "Candy". They are not too different, except that the vocals are a bit different, the pace of "Talk Talk" is less frantic, and "Mirror Man" has cheezier new wave keyboards. The first real moment of interest comes with "Call In The Night Boy PIano Version)", a dramatic reading of this song, accompanied by a spongy bass, with a lot of noodling; stellar vocal renderings in this one, really amazing, and a sign of things to come. That's followed by some regular versions of songs from their early period, such as synth-popper "Striker Up The Band" and "Dum Dum Girl", as well as oddities such as "Question", with its "la la la la la" melodies, and a sweet piano version of "Call In The Night Boys", as well as "Again A Game... Again", which is a strong pop song and would have fit right in on any of the band's first two albums. Eventually, we're hit with the jackpot that anyone who buys this is waiting for - some of the post-rock magic that Talk Talk is infamous for, in the form of wonderful fragments of the experimental sessions of "The Colour of Spring" and "Spirit of Eden". These do show up in the form of "It's Getting Late In The Evening", which was a B-side of the "Colour of Spring" single "Life Is What You Make It" of early 1986, and "For What It's Worth", the B-side of "Living In Another World", a single from the same album that was released in March, 1986. "It's Getting Late in the Evening" is a (nearly) drumless keyboard-a-thon, with piano and Mark Hollis' hauned, floating voice that swells and sways into a burbling ocean of swirling organ sounds; the flood surges, but then eventually disappears. "For What It's Worth" is the more appealing of the two songs, with attractive keyboard hooks melodies and Hollis' patented laid back moan that quivers with emotion. "Pictures of Bernadette" is a pretty regular rocker, while "John Cope" is another moody, melancholic piece with the well-known shuffle beat, the groovy keyboards, and the Hollis moan. Superb.
As a long time fan I was ecstatic when this was first released having survived many years with taped copies of my treasured 7" and 12" vinyls for fear of scratching them. Ironic that I have now had to replace my CD copy because I managed to scratch one of the discs!
The remixes on disc one are pretty sympathetic to the familiar album versions of the singles - in most cases adding to rather than detracting from the songs. Disc 2 is really where the treasures lie - the original b-sides. The disc starts off with three demos recorded prior to first album The Party's Over (all of which made the final cut, albeit it in re-recorded form) originally released as a bonus disc with the 7" of Such a Shame along with a huge fold out poster (80's marketing at its best (worst?)). These are all much more piano based than the synthesizer versions that made the album - and all the better for it in my opinion - showcasing Mark Hollis's voice and his ear for a tune.
The b-sides from the singles taken from the first 2 albums represent the Talk Talk synth-pop sound and if you love the a-sides you will find much to like here (I am particularly partial to Strike Up The Band and Again.. A Game.. Again).
The first sign of a more experimental side to the band surfaces with Call in the Night Boy (b-side to between album single My Foolish Friend). Soon to be vastly reconfigured in a pop version for the It's My Life abum, the piano sketch here points toward how the band would develop, showing regard for Mark Hollis's love of turn of the (20th) century classical piano pioneers like Debussy. More experimentation lies ahead with It's Getting Late in the Evening (b-side to Life's What You Make It from the Colour Of Spring, but certainly sounding more at home with the final tracks on this disc, Eden and John Cope, which were recorded at the time of final EMI album Spirit of Eden).
Another favourite of mine is Pictures of Bernadette which really rocks - I like to think it takes the beautifully discordant one-note guitar solos demonstrated on Spirit of Eden but transfers them to the whole band.
This is a great companion to the 4 albums released during the band's tenure on EMI. Highly recommended and at just over 6 quid for two full CDs an absolute bargain too.
