この人は歌う音楽のジャンルがかなり広範囲に渡る。つまりバーサタイル。ビッグバンドジャズからモダンなポップスまで歌いきる。現代でもトップクラスのジャズシンガーのひとり。これがデビューアルバム。１枚目なので相当張り切っており、ときおりその声のパワフルさが過激すぎてボイスコントロールが圏外になるときがあり、そのへんがこの人の特色。白人シンガー特有の洗練性が特に良く出ており、ゲストの男性シンガーとのコンビネーションもうまくいっている。ビブラートのかけかたもうまくジャズナンバーにおいての抜群の歌唱は特筆に値する。
アレンジも彼女の歌声をスポイルせずに彼女の魅力を倍増させるのに成功している。１０点中８点

While not my first album by Ms. Schuur, I am consistently taken with her voice. Each song she wraps that elastic thing around is so wonderful.

This 1985 release saw the jack of all genres tackling more songs in a pop arena. Her soulful duets with Josè Feliciano (when first I saw his name, I chuckled) will put a warmth in your heart. The vocal chemistry and sexy charisma shine through on American Wedding Song and the single By Design (performed live on American Bandstand to a rabid bunch of young fans who probably had no idea who they were, they brought down the house and burned it up too!)

Needle In A Haystack and Love You Back are fun upbeat 80's style pop with those soulful vocals. Someday We'll All Be Free is a faithful tribute to Donny Hathaway's original, while Take Me To The River is Al Green by way of 80's Linda Ronstadt that works well.

Elsewhere we are treated to ballads like "No Time To Fall In Love" which has a beautiful melody and key change. The lovely jazz ballads "Love Dance" and "Sure Thing" are sparingly arranged so everything spreads out so nicely and those songs sound intimately timeless.

"Make a Plan" and a bossa nova-fied "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing" round out this excellent sophomore release.

Some comment that this release has a dated sound, and wholly throughout the 80's music came and went and instantly dated. Those of us with a more realistic view will note that regardless of synth programming styles and drum machine evolution, the main attraction here is that voice. No one has that sound like Diane Schuur. I only discovered how amazing she was in 2015... 25 years after I first heard her. I was introduced to that voice as a music loving 4-year-old bopping to the album "Garfield: Am I Cool Or What" a GRP compilation that I still have to this day.

If you have to start your Diane collection somewhere I would say this is a good starting point. It's different from almost all of her other releases (truthfully: all of her albums are different from one another...) and she has a soulful fire here that went spare until 91's Pure Schuur (a masterpiece in my humble opinion) and her duet album with our recently lost legend BB King (Heart to Heart, also excellent and bluesy)

Don't miss out on this amazing voice that deserves so much more recognition than she gets. She is simply wonderful.
