Canada's Sloan open their third album, 1997's One Chord to Another, with a jagged rumble of guitars and drums that resolves into a groove and song, "The Good in Everyone," straight out of Something/Anything? As audacious a group of borrowers as Cheap Trick at their best, Sloan quickly line up evocations of Badfinger, George Harrison, and even Chicago. ("Everything You've Done Wrong" grafts the affectless vocal style of Peter Cetera to a track that patches together a half dozen moments from Help!, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper.) It's good to have this peak of power-pop obsessiveness available again. --Rickey Wright

I heard Sloan's version of "Dignified and Old" over the PA system in a grocery cooperative (how's that for Muzak!) It stopped me dead in my tracks because I had not a single idea of who the group could be. As a huge Jonathan Richman fan, I needed to find out who was behind this cover. After much googling and assorted internet searching, I figured out it was a band that I was unfamiliar with - Sloan. I purchased this cd strictly on the strength of that one listen of that one song. And I was not disappointed. (IF you too are a Richman fan and need an additional cover - with a chimey 12 string addition - get Lucksmiths "Spring a Leak" which includes a fun cover of the Smith's "There Is A Light" as well

Besides several other well - executed covers, Sloan's originals are as catchy and smart as anything that was on the radio in the 90s. I lived in Canada for several years in the late 80s and early 90s and I don't know how I missed these guys. It's a shame but I am catching up now. It's also a huge shame they never caught on here in the States. But then the Tragically Hip never did either (past college radio play) so I guess we really don't like 'northern rock'.

Just a quick riposte to the above review. This is actually the first Sloan album I've bought and I am now kicking myself for ignoring them back in the 1990s when the likes of Melody Maker and NME used to write about them. The first three tracks are worth the price of entry alone, but the combination of chunky T-Rex glam, Beatlesy psyche and overarching power pop melody make it an alloyed pleasure, though after a couple of days of driving me mad I finally worked out that Everything You've Done Wrong is a combination of Good Day Sunshine, Getting Better and Aha's Take On Me. The personal pleasure I got from working out that last element was almost physical. Either way, a brilliant album of pop-tastic tunes.

Power-garage-pop from Canada

Lots to get your ears around here! Poppy and thoughtfully arranged from start to finish without sounding overly 'worked' or 'fussy' in any way. From heads down rocking out, to Beatles/Kinks influenced moments, unpredictable melodies and plenty of valve-driven guitar goodness. Fans of power pop legends The Posies will not leave disappointed.
