Written between 1964 and 1971 for Britten's friend Mstislav Rostropovich, these suites exploit every resource of the instrument and require utmost technical, intellectual, and musical proficiency from the player. Though they share a certain austerity and love of sound effects, each has its own character and structure. The first frames three pairs of contrasting movements with a recurring ostinato; the second opens with declamatory conversations between the cello's low and high registers and demands pyrotechnics-like chords, double stops, simultaneous bowing, and plucking; the third alternates plucked and bowed passages and features extreme contrasts of character, dynamics and moods. Young Jean-Guihen Queyras, a multiple prizewinner with a burgeoning European career, surmounts all these formidable hurdles without strain, playing with an unfailingly beautiful, pure, variable tone, and total authority and involvement. --Edith Eisler

ブリテンに無伴奏があるのは知りませんでした。
チェロのCDは人気曲が重なってしまうことがおおいので、これは新鮮に楽しめました。

良いのだが、音楽が音楽だけに無調方向に音がよく行きます。

その辺が分かれ目だと思います。

ボク的には、未だ、可でも非でもない、

否定的なコメントを出している人もいるがブリテンのこの作品は個人的にはかなり好きなのに存外良い現役盤が少ない。デッカから出ているロストロポーヴッチの録音はいささか古く、まだ若いころの録音だがギアン＝ケラスのこの演奏はなかなかよい。少なくともコストパフォーマンスは高い。

１番は出だしがバッハの無伴奏そっくりかなと思いきや無調にギリギリ入ってしまい、でもロマンを讃えている様がすばらしい。バルトークの旋律のようなそれでいてなにか新しいものを感じる。途中演奏にかなり技巧を要する奏法もあるがシンプルに装飾を削り落としているためあまり現代音楽ぽくは聴こえない。これから秋にかけて聴きこんでいきそう。

Un Britten en plena madurez abocado a una muerte prematura escribió estas tres suites y alguna otra obra inspirado por el arte de Rostropovich, su dedicatario. Queyras estrenaba discografía con una gran interpretación que nos llega en sonido de turbadora inmediatez.

A young Mr. Queyras, I believe first performance of Britten solo suites. I have heard many call this the go to performance . I would tend to agree. He has been pulling all the stops in all his other recordings after this one. A beguiling performance considering his young age here. Production is 10/10 , no surprise, get it before it really goes out of print.

Premier enregistrement de Queyras et déjà du BRITTEN, déjà original !
La suite de sa carrière a été à cette image : original.(il vient de l'ensemble intercontemporain)
Ces suites ont été écrites par Britten pour Rostropovitch, et on a longtemps pensé que lui seul pouvait les jouer...c'était sans compter le génie musical et technique de QUEYRAS qui nous prouve une fois de plus (ou la première fois plutôt!!)que c'est un des plus grand violoncelliste du monde ! n'ayons pas peur des mots!
Il a aussi enregistré, comme tout le monde, les suites de BACH et c'est absolument hallucinant!
Cette version est comparable (meilleure?) à celle de Rostro, et supérieure à toutes les autres.
Indispensable.
