If only all artists could describe themselves so succinctly by their name. Canibus, real name Germaine Williams, originally from Jamaica, has a voice of the intensity, coarseness and repetitive instincts synonymous with too much puff. It makes his rap style a fair assault, even before you get onto his subject matter (his first American hit, "Second Round Knockout", was a dis against LL Cool J). What makes Canibus fascinating is his near punk-like obsession with anarchy ("Get Retarded" and "Buckingham Palace" are song titles you'd have thought Malcolm McLaren would have trademarked in 1976), made all the more confrontational by the thick, gripping gravel that comes out of his larynx. For someone who linked with Wyclef Jean (who prduced this album), this is no easy ride, but, if you can ignore the bigotry (there's a track called "Niggonometry"), it is a dark path worth creeping down. --Charlie Porter
