Evans aventura nuevas combinaciones sonoras.

Interesting but not essential Gil Evans.

For the budget price, it was nice to be reacquainted with this Gil Evans album but the passage of time hasn't really made me change my opinion of this disc. For someone of his talent, Evans was massively under-recorded at the height of his powers and this disc effectively marked a point at which his music had been massively transformed with electronic keyboards and where he started to record more frequently. I have always felt that record producers latched on to Gil too late or that his notoriously slow method of arranging worked against him. When I was younger I was much less critical of Evans than I am now and whilst I can appreciate his 1950's and 60's output almost unreservedly, the later stuff is uneven. It is a shame that there is such an abundance of his later material that is accentuated by the band's relatively small repertoire. This record captures Evans before his Hendrix obsession and a number of the tracks will be unfamiliar to the causal fan.
The writing on this record doesn't have the same quality as his more acoustic work yet it is still distinctive as being Gil Evans. A feature if this period is the scoring of the tuba in the high register with the tonal palette not quite matching the achievements of what he had been doing ten years earlier. For me, it highlights Evans' understanding of harmony more than his orchestration = something I feel is overlooked. I would contest the idea that he was now influenced by rock or fusion but it is clear that synthesizers have a more significant role in the music. The best tracks are "Thoroughbred", "Blues in orbit" and " Cry of hunger" which seem quite prescient of the way jazz now sounds. The version of "Summertime" is a re-working of the old arrangement written for Miles with the short and punchy "Eleven" also being associated with the trumpeter. I like the version of George Russell's "Blues in orbit" which employs the composer's unique sense of harmony with a pithy arrangement and it actually really good fun. It is only away from the studio with the live performance of the closing "Zee-zee" that my enthusiasm really waned. I loved this track when I heard it for the first time as a teenager but it is so typical of some of Evans' more minimal approach to writing in some instances and there is insufficient there to hold the attention. Not a lot is really going on.
Wind forward into the mid 1980s and Evans had almost transformed the orchestra in to a jam band - a kind of synth and bass heavy version of Basie's Kansas City era band. On this record, the arrangements are still in place but it is not really on a par with his more celebrated work which captured the zeitgeist of the time. By 1973 things had moved on and this record captures the kind of happy medium between post-bop and electro-jazz. This record also seemed a bit odd to me and not as satisfactory as a later disc like "Priestess" where this compromise really comes to fruition. At the time, Gil Evans could still claim to be one of the most forward thinking and creative minds in orchestral jazz but the music has moved on nearly fifty years later so if some of the distinctive Evans' traits in the writing remain, there are plenty of writers in big band jazz today who have this kind of approach well within their grasp.
All in all, there is sufficient to warrant investigation but the series of albums he cut up to "Impressionism" are truly essential.
