Where does one begin? The Penguin guide used to say that this was one of the most warm-hearted and affectionate performances on record, and they did not just mean of this piece. They were correct. First to timings. The first, third and fourth movements here are no slower than many other performances, in fact you will not hear a craggier, more funereal first movement, a more atmospheric or bucolic scherzo, or a more tender and heart-breaking performance of the adagietto on any other recording. You may hear a little more polish, but you will sacrifice character, and character is what Barbirolli is clearly after; character - not self-indulgent sentimentality. Now the second and fifth movements are slower than normal. This works perfectly well in the second movement. Mahler marks this "stormy, with the utmost vehemence". He does not mark it "schnell"! Barbirolli is certainly not schnell, but he IS very VERY dark. The chorale theme, when it emerges is blended with the orchestra, not blared out, and after it subsides the storm returns with the UTMOST vehemence, putting the chorale into the shade, as it should, for now. I am not completely convinced by the pace for the finale (although I am convinced by the closing pages, which are very moving indeed), it is VERY slow, but it is also full of a kind of galumphing good humour - it does not lack for smiles. Could Barbirolli have taken this movement faster though, after the weighty second movement? - It is difficult to imagine a fast finale following all that has gone before, the performance is of a piece with itself. At the very end Barbirolli again does not allow the big chorale theme to blurt out crudely (as normally happens frankly). He judges balances perfectly, there is nobility here, a recognition that the victory is hard won, a remembrance of things past. This remastering is superb, there is no hiss yet the ambiance of the original (very fine) recording is preserved. In fact it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Perfect? certainly not. Better than nearly all the other very professionally dispatched but far glibber renditions of modern times? Absolutely! Take it to the desert island? Without question!

This is a satirical review from one who listens quite a bit to Mahler's music, to this specific symphony, and believes his music is safe to hear.

Major Mahler listeners risk depression. I do not know anyone who could orchestrate and compose depressing music better. He was just brilliant at it. He could have been Mussorgsky's counselor, and that would take some doing. He appears to be a Jungian dream, a major psyche case. I can just see him sitting with Freud. His music is really taking off as our kids watch horror shows at the movies. With his scintillating Das Lied von der Erde, Mahler skates between life and death and ends up guess where. Tired and out of breath. That's enlightening. But it's fun and its brilliant, and one gets hooked.

Of course, I just love this music and tilt my zany side toward describing it like this. (I am really hooked on a lot of Mahler's amazingly creative music!)Some of his music, as I said, I really have really warmed up to. Some days when the bottom falls out and I feel really like a loser, it's always great to go home and put on some Mahler. And I find he could lament circumstances far more nobly than my pity party. Friends, that's what he does better than anyone else. Try him out and see. Don't try to understand it. Just feel it, and you'll get it.

Whether or not you agree with all that, I love the way Sir John plays this 5th. His conducting reminds me of a pole balancer walking a canyon. Tip this way or that way, and you're gone. Got to balance it. My, Sir John does a great job of balancing this controversial symphony. I don't know anybody who conducts this psyche case music any better. This symphony is brilliant, difficult, and amazing. And Sir John pulls it off. What a devoted performance!

As I indicated, I think the conducting is simply amazing. The committed orchestra plays flat out. And the triumph of this performance squeals out of the cd in probing, convincing doses. I have listened to a lot of performances of this symphony, and I own several different copies of it. However, Sir John's is the most convincing, and the most commendatory I have ever heard of this brilliant neurotic's music. It's too bad Gustav Mahler did not live in the era of Aeschylus. He could have been in some plays.

Get this thing from Amazon.com as soon as you can. Hang on while you enjoy it. Zinggg...with it.

Una interpretacion magistral y además una grabación como todo lo que se hacía en esos años. Muchos ingenieros de sonido actuales, deberian aprender las tecnicas de grabación de antes.
