1980年代初期のスコットランド・インディーズ・ブーム（シンプル・マインズ、オレンジ・ジュース、アソシエイツ）が鎮火した頃になって、ようやくグラスゴー出身のバンド、ブルー・ナイルは地味ながらも圧倒的なデビューを果たした。このデビュー作は、ポップス史上もっとも美しいオーケストレーションがほどこされたアルバムの1枚に数えられ、ファンキーなベース、繊細なストリングス、あふれるシンセによる時代を超えた実にきめ細かなアレンジは、とりわけタイトル曲できわ立っている。

８３年発表。一時期にたくさん出てきたスティリー・ダンのフォロワー的なグループとして紹介されることが多いが、本作ではやや退廃的な雰囲気も感じさせ、時に後期ジャパンのような深い味わいを感じさせる作品に仕上がっている。
１．はスラップ・ベースとピチカートのストリングスが印象的。ポップだがアヴァンギャルドな雰囲気も合わせ持っており、曲調としては元ジャパンのミック・カーンに似ている気がする。２．のややエキゾチックな雰囲気もモロに後期のジャパンそのままであり、そこに美しいストリングスが絡む音像はなかなかのもの。６．はカンタベリー系のスチュワート＆ガスキンもカヴァーした名曲。３．ではスティール・パン風のサウンドを取り入れ落ち着いた曲調にとろぴかるな要素を加味している。
全体的にやや淡々としており、ロック的な激しさはないが、落ち着いた雰囲気の中に印象的なサウンドを各曲に組み込んでおり、単調さを見事に回避している。

　英国はグラスゴーのブルー・ナイルと言えば、やっぱ、1984年リリースのデビューLP。
　ジャケットはちゃんと３人が写っているが、ヴォーカル、ギターのポール・ブキャナンのソロ・ユニットのような印象があり（クレジットは全曲、ブキャナンとベースのロバート・ベル）、ポスト・パンクの時代だったが、地味、あまりにも、シブい１枚。
　本作は、２枚組にグレード・アップした、リイシューCD。

　ブキャナンは声域、声量、声質、決して恵まれた歌い手ではないが、アコースティックとピコピコの均衡が絶妙、かつ、静謐で内省的なサウンドと相まって、空間創りに貢献。
　ポップとは言えないし、中にはインテリの悪い面が露骨に出た退屈なナンバーもあり、プロ好みではあるが、ヴォリュームを上げて聴けば、タイトル曲の１．「A Walk Across the Rooftops」（ミディアム・テンポで、音数が少ないが、スリリング）、歌詞はクサいが、壮大な拡がりを感じさせる２．「Tinseltown in the Rain」、リミックスがシングルともなった４．「Stay」（歌詞はクサいが、サウンド良し）とか、今、聴いても、色褪せていない。

　CD－１は、オリジナルの７曲のみ。ボートラ無し。
　CD－２は、ボーナス・ディスクで、７曲収録。
　入手不可のシングル、別ヴァージョンとか聴けるのは、それなりに嬉しいが、未発表曲は３．「St. Catherine's Day」は、個人的に、正直言えば、どうでもいいナンバー。
　B・D全体的に魅力に欠けるというより、臆測ではあるが、ライヴ・テイクとか山程あっただろうに、まず、商品として、サーヴィス精神の皆無さを批判したい。

1981年にスコットランド、グラスゴーで結成されたポップバンド、ザ・ブルー・ナイル（The Blue Nile）の1stアルバム。歌志向のアコースティックなシンセポップ、またはアダルト・オルタナティヴ・ポップ。ヴォーカルとシンセと生楽器（ギター、ベース、キーボード、ドラム、ストリングス）が一体となった、アンビエント音楽のような有機的な音。シングル曲「Stay」「Tinseltown in the Rain」収録。ブライアン・イーノ（Brian Eno）、プリファブ・スプラウト（Prefab Sprout）、エヴリシング・バット・ザ・ガール（Everything But the Girl）を好む方におすすめ

ジャケットのモノクロ写真のイメージそのままに
静謐な音が当時のテクノロジーを駆使した形で奏でられるデビュー・アルバム。
80年代のシンセが主体となった音作りなのに、当時のエレ・ポップとは一線を画しており、
少ない音数で、音の隙間も音楽にしてしまったすごいアレンジである。
80年代のエレ・ポップが好きな人は聴いて損はないはず（←結局エレ・ポップ扱い）。
「英国の至宝」や「ミュージシャンズ・ミュージシャン」と評されることなく、
もっと聴かれるべき音楽ではないだろうか。

英国の至宝的存在の彼らのファースト。もう躊躇なく☆5つですね。それぐらいの作品。最高傑作といわれるセカンド作｢ハッツ｣ばかりが有名ですが、このアルバムも負けず劣らずの完成度を誇っていると思う。ファーストであるにも関わらず異常なまでの完璧な音作りは圧巻。エレクトロニクスと生楽器を巧みに消化した楽曲群。何よりも②の素晴らしさ！クール且つファンキーなバックトラックに乗っかるポール･ブキャナンの苦みばしったヴォーカルの素晴らしさは未だに、というか永遠に古びないと思わされる。ハウス･アレンジでもして現代によみがえらせたら間違いなくクラシックになると思う。人気曲④にしても、どうやったらこんな包容力に満ちたエレクトロニクスの使い方ができるのかとハッとさせられる名曲。⑥は次作を予感させる静謐な音作りが聞けるロマンティックな逸品。｢ハッツ｣よりもややアッパーでポップな楽曲が多いので初めて聴く方は、まずこのファーストを聞いてみて下さい。永遠の名作です。

　彼らが1〜2作目を出した頃、僕は反抗期と思春期まっただ中のガキンチョであった。つまり、大人のニューウェイヴ・ポップスを地味に、しかも上質に演奏した彼らの良さなんて理解できる訳がなく（笑）、本当の意味で彼らの音を味わえるようになったのは、随分大人になってからである。

　3人ともが名門グラスゴー大学（＝アダム・スミスやジェームズ・ワットを輩出）の出身で、社会人生活を送りながら趣味的に音楽活動を行い、20代半ばで自主制作したシングルがきっかけとなって、更にそこから数年後にやっと20代後半で本作品によりデビューしたのだが、こんなプロフィールからも分かるように、彼らの作る音楽というのは、ロックの衝動、初々しい恋愛、シンセ・ポップやニュー・ロマの華やかさ、といった思春期のリスナー達が感情移入しやすい要素とは良くも悪く全く無縁で、大人が都会で勤め人生活を送りながら聴き易いような、落ち着いたロマンスをしっとりと歌った点が特徴となっている。別の言い方をすると、育ちの良さが感じられるというか。

　本盤の場合、様々な楽器をバランス良く配置しながらじっくりと丁寧に練り上げられたサウンドがデビュー作品とは思えない程の完成度を誇っており、その後の作品と比べても音作りの上では本作が一番凝っていると言えるかもしれない。端の方まで細かな音を散りばめたバック・トラックに乗っかるボーカルはというと、どの曲もサビ自体はそれ程キャッチ―ではなく地味なメロディなんだが、その控え目なところも彼らの存在感と相まってサウンド・カラーに昇華されているという不思議なマジックが醸し出されている。

　なお、本作品は2012年にリマスタリングされ、2枚組で再発された。これから手に取るなら、そちらの盤の方が良いだろう。

As others have noted, this is a supreme work of art. I recently bought this album, I had never heard of the group before. I was persuing 80s new wave mix tapes on youtube, looking for cool stuff I hadn't heard, and came across "Tinseltown in the Rain". Loved it right away, bought the album. Let me just say: it's definitely "New Wave synthy" enough to satisfy people who are looking for that "New Wave" sound, but it certainly does not fit the "commercial" mode that you might expect ( or want), and the reason is simple: these guys are artists and their unique voice makes its mark on this album. The amount of time they spent on their craft is obvious. In fact you could even listen to this, without knowing what you're hearing, and call it modern day indie (though way better than the stupid two chord indie stuff). In more than one place I hear stuff that vaguely reminds me of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love.

now, I must say, hearing "Tinseltown" first gave me expectations of what the rest of the album would sound like, which is not the case. The whole album is moody, "Tinseltown" is probably the most upbeat "synth-poppy" of the tunes. In any case, it's a great album, well crafted.

From the first track of the first release from a new band it was evident that I was listening to something extra special. I bought this as a test record for my high end Hi-Fi, it was a welcome sign that a manufacturer of high level turntables Linn recognized that vinyl offerings were poor at best, as were the pressings. Garbage in Garbage out was a phrase Linn's founder and front man Ivor Tiefenbrun coined long before the ComputerTechies and Geeks latched on.
I have loved The Blue Nile ever since. A walk across the roof tops is a work of musical and literate art. That rock solid and rhythmic undertone, combined with rich velvety melodies and notes that stretch and dance, intertwining around a piece in pure harmony and grace. Stretching our romantic souls and letting our hearts be troubled. It has the elegance of a musical black tie affair wrapped around the voice of pure genius which is that of Paul Buchanan who becomes not unlike an instrument himself, tying the melodies and harmonies together in a way that only a true master can, not dissimilar to a modern Sinatra or Martin, there is an esoteric pureness about the vocals, where at times you feel the pain and the struggle of the lyric in a story to which it is best described and translated in Buchanan's extreme delivery of his musical narrative and of his literate genius. A musical masterpiece, a piece of modern art, where the music is never rushed or forced, laid back slow and deliberate where less is definitely more. Mainstream ? no, Top selling ? possibly, chart busting never. why? It is simple, the format was pop but on a whole new level, it was synthesizer based as was most 80's music however this was totally unique from its conception to its delivered result this was Avant-garde this was not pop, this was a art. Had the phrase new romantic not been coined to describe Duran Duran, Spandua Ballet and the like, it may have been the perfect genre for this music. Love songs, Life songs but with a difference these were individual masterpieces, pictures lovingly painted on a musical canvas. As with all true art these were crafted with the passion and honesty of a master crafts man.
Pop music for the intellect, if you don't get it I am afraid you have an undeveloped heart as this is more akin to the emotional mature listener. The journey continued with Hats the second album which saw the band at their utmost best. To venture into realms of The Blue Nile requires at the very least the respect that the listener goes back to the beginning and follows the journey from A to B, to cut corners, take a short cut would only be doing an injustice one's self.
Tinsel town in the rain could be any town in the rain but to deny that there is an influence from the geographical origins of the band and other bands of the time would be denying the people of Scotland the right to call it home grown. Deacon Blue, Del Amitri, Aztec Camera to name but a few who surfaced around the same time had one common attribute; they were Scottish by origin and had a unique story to tell. A walk across the roof tops will remain a masterpiece a first class debut offering as much as Raintown was for Deacon Blue and Waking Hours was for Del Amitri.

A walk across the roof tops paints a tantalizing image in one's mind of puddles in the rain, reflecting the visual warmth of neon lights whilst walking through a deserted town late at night, discarded newspapers blowing in the wind. Where one is wandering aimlessly reflecting the hurt and the pain of love lost. Bitter sweet and wonderfully broody mixed with spine tingling heart rendering melodies and vocals that truly send goose bumps tingling down your skin.
This is not experimental music this is Art perhaps it is a bonus that so few have ever found The Blue Nile perhaps a selfish thing to say but it is almost like a grown up secret.If God has a Hi-Fi he is sure to have a copy of this in his top ten albums of all time.
As with any release of distinction a lot of success goes down to the quality and skills of the recording. In the case of The Blue Nile they have pulled out all the stops and credit goes to all the engineers and producers involved. The results, the dynamics and sparkle within each track shows that the studio crews are an integral part of the band. The original album did not translate well from Vinyl to CD and without explanation, I will just add CD was sterile and imperfect it was a new medium discovering itself. To discover this re-release was great news but to discover that it has been re-mastered is an immense joy for me and the new release sounds superb on a 192 khz 24bit player. Nothing is lost but much is gained in the re-master which I am convinced is down to the Band using the original recording team such as the like of Calum Malcom
First released in the UK on vinyl for Linn records, .this was a first release for both the Label and the Band. Released in April 1984 Linn Records LKH 1. First released on CD in mid 89 the re-mastered album is now released on Virgin/Linn Records LKHCDR 1 (5099901730326).
This is definitely not one intended as back ground music, send the children to bed put the latch up on the door, get the glass of Vino Rosso and a comfy chair turn the music on and the lights down low, welcome everyone of you at last you really are a grown up.

Having purchased "Hats" and "High" some years ago I was curious to hear "A Walk Across Across The Rooftops" their first record. I just received it and like it very much. It's on the "Linn" label, in case you're not familiar with this company they make very high end hi fi components and it shows in the recording quality which has to do with both the artists and the label. I do not have "Peace..." but "Hats" their 2nd record is my personal favourite followed by "Walk Across..." and then "High", again very good. They haven't produced many albums over the years - "A Walk Across...." came out in '83, "Hats" in '89, "Peace at Last" in '99 and "High" in 2004! All my copies are on CD which sound very un-CD like i.e. all are very warm sounding - approaching good vinyl. The song writting and production values are of extremely high quality on all their recordings. The mixes are sparse but very full sounding which is very difficult to pull off, and the sounds of the instruments are amazing. All are excellent and are highly recommended!
UPDATE: January 2015: I recently purchased the "vinyl" editions of both "Walk..." & "Hats" and needless to say the vinyl is sonically superior - more depth, better soundstageing and better overall "fidelity" i.e. you can hear further into the recording.
