I got hooked on Szymanowski by the Stabat Mater and moved on to other vocal/choral works, the violin concertos, chamber and piano works etc. -- didn't try this one until now because i'm not a big opera fan. But now i would call Krol Roger the pinnacle of his work, and it's given a beautiful performance here, atmospheric or dramatic as needed, with excellent sound. The opera is just a little too long to fit on one disc, but the 10-minute bonus on the 2nd disc is also a treat, and the main work would be worth the Naxos price even without it. I think anyone who likes Stravinsky's Rossignol or Oedipus Rex, or Szymanowski's Third Symphony, will love this.
