As we hurtle toward the technological utopia of tomorrow, the trend of digital, computer-inspired music offers predictions as to what our intergalactic house parties of the future will sound like--but then so did progressive rock in 1978. Step into Porcupine Tree's time machine and travel back to analogue synthesizers mixed with Hammond organ, guitar solos that "texturize," and a good old-fashioned weighty bass guitar. Songwriter, guitarist, pianist, vocalist, producer, and string arranger Steven Wilson is Porcupine Tree, and this is his sixth LP. There are a very limited number of people who can wear this many hats and maintain consistency and quality throughout--Wilson is not one of them. However, he has made a listenable disc that will nestle quite nicely between your Yes, Marillion, and Moody Blues albums. Who knows--it may even be the CD your new neighbors from Alpha Centauri borrow and never return. --David J. Browne

Infaltable si eres fan de Steven Wilson y de porciones tree si bien no alcanza el nivel de otros albums de la banda no deja de ser un gran disco lleno de ambientes atmosféricos y pasajes de gran musicalidad muy recomendable

I did know anything about Porcupine Tree whilst they were still on the go. My introduction to them emerged slowly after I heard a song from Steven Wilson’s debut solo album (under his own name anyway) Insurgentes. The song was No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun and I thought it sounded a bit like the King. Rims on of the early 2000’s. That was in Fopp Records in Edinburgh and i immediately bought Insurgentes. It was then that I found that Tony Levin had played on that song and that Gavin Harrison too, who although I had not yet heard him play with King Crimson, had recently become that bands’ second drummer. I then moved on to other Steven Wilson albums but I was mostly sold on that first album I had bought on CD/DVD

Now I am using my evening wind down time to listen to music on vinyl and my latest fad was first getting the Steven Wilson albums on vinyl and now Porcupine Tree and I am loving it. Stupid Dream seems to represent a consolidation of albums that follow a sonic and song structure trajectory. It was there before but this seems far more tight. Having said that following the debut album, On the Sunday of Life…, which I found more patchy than any of the later Porcupine Tree albums, this band has produced albums that no band would be ashamed of.

I feel kind of funny writing this review because at the time, the same day, I have purchase Recording and The stupid dream by Porcupine tree through Market Place and did recievde the 2 cds the same day, and even though I was ready to review the 2 idems, I thought to wait a bit between the 2 reviews so that one would not influence the other one or at least not so much.
having said that it is hard for me not to mention at time the album Recording. As I said in my Recording review, that was an album for music lover to enjoy without getting so mucdh a certain amount of so call commercial track on it. Now, this album, Stupid dream is for sure pack with more tunes that you will be able to easyly remember and kind of sing the tune in your head. I know that it is not really right to use the word commercial when we talk about any of the Porcupine tree albums, as I have mention, I have over 20 albums of the band and it is very easy to see a certain patern happening. Maybee instead of using the word commercial , i will use the word friendly and more easy to get in a shorter time. If this make any sens to you.
Stupid dream is so wonderfull because it goes the complete time of the album a little to the left or the right of being so call commercial and when you finish to listen to it for the first time, you have a feeling , a good one, that yhou have understand the concept of the album or at least you have your own understanding of the album, I am kind of sure that if you would take ten person and ask them the meaning of this album, chances are that you would get different answers, but that is ok, I kind of think that they do it more less on purpose , but that is just me.
but the point is that everyone will have his or her idea and will be happy with it after one listening, wich I can not say that it would happen with the album Recording after the first listen.
For me, it is a matter of how I feel a certain day, I have my day that I want to listen an album that I still don't know what it is about, it kind of bugs me but at the same time I like the fact that I have to work on it to get it. But other day, album like this one and let say lightbuld sun or fear of a blank planet will be easy to simply just enjoy and you don't have to work at itg to figure why the band did this or that.
As I said before , I do believe that Steven wilson is nothing short of a genius, so rare now, well, in fact, they have always been rare. The kind of person that yes of course they want to make money, yes they want the place to be pack at the concdert, but you have a sens that that is not all what the man or the band is about.
I often compare Steven wilson with Robert fripp, I was not surprise at all when I realise that Steven wilson was heavyly involve with the project to do the remixtg of the King crimson catalogue, it made sens to me.
I am 56 years old and I never thought that I could say about someone the type of thing I say about the talent of Steven wilson, I thought that record company and and the way the radio was going in the 80's, I just could not see how someone like him could make it, but of course I didn't realise at the time the power that something call internet would have in the near future.
without the power of the internet, someone like Steven wilson could simply not make it, that is what I believe, I can not count on regular radio station to intruduce to me some great talents, time have change.
But I am so glad that things have change again and band like Porcupine tree did fine their place.
get the album, it is a great one.
P.S. I am sorry if I got carry away, I will do my best that I don't get carry away with big type of speach.
Try to forgive me for now.
