Just a few bars into song 1, "Room at the Top", and you know you're in the capable hands of a master songwriter. A mellow chorus wafts by, whispered in Petty's patented Byrdsian drawl, and the song seems to tick-tock to a stop. But storming over the top is a riff from guitarist Mike Campbell. Another chorus and you know there's a bridge creeping up. Petty, in a gesture that's both droll and dynamic, mutters "Hit it" to announce it. The proceedings slow again, then Campbell's gears start grinding again, and there's a grand crescendo that is, if you'll pardon the pun, heartbreakingly wicked. Then Petty murmurs a deep, resonate "No-oh" in a broken, brilliantly understated way that's rock & roll perfect! If you understand the alchemist genius that transmutes such humble metal into gold, you're ready to curl up with 14 songs of near-similar standing. Petty and the Heartbreakers have succeeded in making an album that's stunning in its simplicity yet as carefully ornate and wondrous as a stained-glass window. Indeed, renaissance might be an appropriate tag for the reborn Petty, except that he's never really gone away. アメリカンロックは商業的にはマイナーなジャンルであるが、Tom Petty＆The　Heartbreakersは希なそこそこ売れるメジャーバンドだと思う。その彼らが出したスタジオ作品の中でも最もバランスがとれた本格的アメリカンロックだと感じるのがこの「Ｅｃｈｏ」である。
前作のサウンドトラック「She'ｓ　The　One」では良い作品だとは思うけども少しメロディーが暗いというかコマーシャルな曲調のロックが少ない感じがする。本作はTom Pettyのソロ活動とは違い、「バンド」らしさが良い意味で音楽的に成功したアルバム。特にピアノやオルガン、太いギターが心地よく、もちろんTOMのボーカルもドライなバンド音にすごくはまっている。初期の頃のR&B色が強いロック感を殺さずに、乾いたHEARTLAND ROCK、広い意味でアメリカンロックのアーシーな部分を存分に感じさせてくれる、非常にバランスのとれたロック。初期の頃と80年代の良いところがうまく融合された素晴らしいルーツロックアルバム。

元ＥＬＯのジェフ・リンと組んだトムの初ソロアルバムに続いたハートブレーカーズとの前作は、
中音域ギッシリが特徴のＥＬＯの音作りがキツすぎて、
マテリアル（曲）は良かったのに、あまり愛聴盤になりませんでした。

以来、離れていたファンとしては、このアルバムは久々に心からスカッとした好盤、
発表から７年が経ちましたが、何度聞いても良い気分になります。
オリジナルメンバーのドラムが抜けて、名うての英国人スタジオミュージシャン、スティーヴ・フェローンがサポートに。
トムもスティーヴも同じ'５０年代生まれで、録音当時４８〜９歳。
ロックンロールに定年は無い。

１曲目のヒラ歌（Ａメロ）で「スネアはブラシか・・、バンドも年相応の落ち着きに・・」と思いきや、
マイクのギターがガリガリ始めれば、一気にアメリカン・ロック。
この曲始め、ともそればかったるくなりがちなミドルテンポの曲が多いのですが、
バンドの叩き出すグルーヴが最高に良いので、全然飽きさせません。
捨て曲？、ないなあ、そんなの。

重ねた年輪が醸し出す、豊潤な大人のロック。

　彼らを聞き始めてから何年経つのだろう。いつもいつも順風満帆とは行かなかったが、常に良質なロックアルバムを僕らに届けてくれたトム・ペティ＆ハートブレイカーズ。彼らがリック・ルービンとがっぷり組んで到達した、ロックミュージックの最高峰がこのアルバム。
　
　当時のトムのプライベートでの感情を反映してか、やや重めの曲が多いものの、まるでジャクソン・ブラウンも顔負けの、抜群のソングライティングをもってして、普遍性を持った短編小説のような作品に見事なまでに昇華した15曲。まさに捨て曲無しの大傑作に仕上がった。
　
　それにしてもハートブレイカーズの面々の演奏の巧みさ、凄さはどうだ。もともと各種セッションに引っ張りだこの辣腕ミュージシャン揃いではあるが、過不足のない、まさにこのタイミングにはこの音以外は無いというような、全てに意味のある音だけが連ねられた、ロックとはここまで雄弁な境地に達した音楽なのかと思わずにはいられない。
　
　(5)は彼らの全キャリアの中でも屈指の名曲。タイトル曲(7)や(1)(2)(14)も素晴らしい。マイク初のボーカル曲(10)はご愛嬌か（笑）。彼らの最高傑作にして、90年代を代表するこのアルバムは、リック・ルービンにとっても最高傑作ではと密かに思っている。

ちょくちょくある、ＰＶで見たことがあるあれなんだっけな〜なんか記憶に残ってるんだけどな〜…をyoutubeで探してSwingin'だった事がわかり早速購入。Swingin'だけボーカルだけアレンジが違うところが◎。たまに聴きたくなる。

Swingin'以外にもWon't last long、Rhino skinなども名曲。
ギターサウンドも素晴らしい。

Echo's overshadowed by its legacy rather a lot - It's remembered for being the 'sad' Petty album, around the time that bassist Howie Epstein spiralled into substance abuse, Petty went through a divorce and the years seemed to move beyond the band's heyday. For sure, thematically and tonally, it's one of the Heartbreakers' most downbeat projects. Even the rockers ('Billy the Kid', 'I Don't Wanna Fight', 'About to Give Out') deal with fairly dark, 'raw' subjects. But there are some beautiful ballads here, like the title track, or opener, 'Room at the Top' - which still ranks amongst the best Petty has ever done. There's surprisingly little filler here, and whilst Echo undoubtedly seems a bleak stance after the open, airy highway rock of Full Moon Fever, Into the Great Wide Open - even the faster numbers of Wildflowers - it's undeniably still a Tom Petty album; packed with his wry observation, defiant optimism and wit.
The album itself is split across three sides, on two vinyl discs - themselves housed in a lovely gatefold - with a neat etching of the album's 'logo' on the D-side. It's a nice touch, and helps make the whole record feel yet more unique. This can be pretty expensive to pick up on vinyl these days, but absolutely worth it for those with a long-lasting love for Petty and his band.

I really like this cd, I only recently discovered some of the songs on U tube & loved them so purchased the cd... many great songs that never get played on the radio... pretty sad.. the radio stations sure can suck... I Love Tom & The Heartbreakers... miss him big time already... RIP .Tom

Long considered his 'divorce album', this is a truly beautiful album from start to finish. As troubled as the writing and recording apparently was - the songs here are just superb.
I strongly recommend this album to Tom Petty fans - especially in this edition. Magical.
