This was the last Giuffre recording done during his "folk Jazz" period before Giuffre moved to other stylistic ventures and it's one of his best in that gendre. Just Bob Bookmeyer on valve trombone, the great Jim Hall on guitar and Giuffre on clarinet, tenor and baritone saxophones. A "living room" band! The music is seemless between written and improvised parts and the communication in the trio is uncanny. The music swings and has a wonderful rhythmic feel and yet there is no rhythm section. Giuffre's creative writing is evident on the title track (a suite in 4 movements) coupled with two interpretations of two great Jazz standards. Monk's "Blue Monk" and the Eddie Durham/Edgar Battle hit "Topsy". A sheer musical delight.

This excellent CD features the same trio that made a famous appearance on the film 'Jazz On A Summer's Day' with Jimmy Giuffre(clarinet, tenor sax, baritone sax); Bob Brookmeyer(valve-trombone) & Jim Hall(guitar). It was recorded in New York City on December 3, 1958 a few months after their performance of 'The Train and the River' at the Newport Jazz Festival. The 18-minute 'Western Suite' has four movements and this empathetic trio create an airy and spacious feel with subtle interplay and superb solos. The other two tracks are impressive versions of 'Topsy' and Thelonious Monk's 'Blue Monk'. All in all, the inventive and swinging jazz on 'Western Suite' is an ideal introduction to the Jimmy Giuffre Trio.
Interesting attempt at an unique form of the fusion of disparate musical traditions. Brookmeyer's playing is, as always, inventive and centered. I don't think I'll be playing this one as often as many others in my collection.
