Doug McCombs made clear his mind-stretching abilities on bass long ago with Tortoise and Eleventh Dream Day. But as Brokeback, McCombs goes way further than on his other projects. The gig is this: McCombs plays searching bass, often in slow, minor-key episodes, on occasion joined by a cast of fellow Chicagoans like John Herndon on drums, John McEntire on keyboards, Josh Abrams and Noel Kuppersmith on acoustic basses, and Rob Mazurek on cornet. The music plays like an imaginary soundtrack, a soundscape that fits somewhere on a vast map. Luckily, McCombs hasn't lost his opportunity to title his session with a geographic reference. Heard as Field Recordings from the Cook County Water Table, this sounds neither like a field recording nor an image of Cook County. It's spacious and warm and expansive. --Andrew Bartlett

Being a longtime Tortoise fan, I bought this album when it first was released nearly 15 years ago. I wasn't too sure what to think at first, and while I liked it, I wasn't quite ready for music so subtle and spacious. Mentally, I wasn't prepared for a sound as poetic and pure as this album. I sold it and soon regretted it, buying it again years later, and rediscovering a glistening gem of a release. Played mostly by Tortoise bassist Doug Mccombs, with John Mccentire on production, there is a deep respect and reverence for space throughout. Some songs are more upbeat while others linger and build slowly like an early morning fog through the trees. I'm reminded of a couple of old semi-rural towns I lived in, where you would occasionally hear the trains pass and whistle at night, and not just because there are some actual field recording of trains and birds calling here, nicely woven into some of the compositions. I think of quiet summer days spent in the country with my grandparents, with nothing but a tire swing on a tree and an unobstructed view of endless hillsides disappearing into the horizon. You don't see these kinds of things too much anymore, nor is music like this all too common, unfortunately. Fortunately, there are some very talented folks from Chicago who understand this, and miraculously were able to recreate it all with the guidance of knowing hearts and hands. This time, it's a keeper.
