Amazonレビュー
H.M.S. Fable is an album that seemed to fall out of a clear blue sky. It seemed astonishing to learn that Shack were still going--though they'd surfaced briefly in 1995, they were widely assumed to have completely disappeared sometime in the dying days of the 1980s. After a few plays of H.M.S. Fable, it seemed more astonishing still that everyone had forgotten what they were capable of. Shack, who appeared doomed to skulk through posterity as one of those ghostly never-were bands that are more talked about than listened to, had ignored the script. H.M.S. Fable commanded, and was granted, centre stage. Of course, it probably helped matters for the elusive Liverpudlians that Oasis had become the biggest band in Britain pretty much by doing Shack's act, though not quite as well. If H.M.S. Fable is any one thing, it's the album Oasis like to think they've been making. Shack lift from the same sources (the Beatles, mostly) but have the wit to do more than just giving the heisted riffs a quick respray before selling them on. Shack have taken it apart and put it together again in a way that suits them: in terms of pop guitar balladry, this album reinvents the wheel. That Michael Head sings like an angel with a hangover doesn't hurt. --Andrew Mueller

The recent Uncut reviews on TOW and TMWOTS and backstory about the Head brothers piqued my interest. This album is a sold gold treasure. I really don't know where to start. The sheer energy and verve of the songs is mixed with a scally pathos and sensitivity i have never encountered in a record before. From Natalie's Party to Daniella I kept wondering if my ears were deceiving me!!!!
Daniella broke my heart, true melancholia. Having said that there are many uplifting and joyous elements here to . The opener, Natalie's Party and Pull Together are life affirming. Streets of Kenny, 'I don't wanna bag, i want a big one' well the new 'Cold Turkey or 'Heroin' maybe, who knows, when cares. When music is as powerful as this, Mick Head could be singing about Calpol and it would still sound emotional and chilling.
Great guitar sound on here and I love the way the vocals are layered and stacked. Now to my wife's great chagrin it's time to delve deeper into the Shack/Strands back catalogue. It promises to be quite a ride!
"Comedy" is one of the prettiest pop rock songs I've ever heard. "Pull Together" is ethereally and austerely beautiful. "Lend's Some Dough" is another favorite -- an upbeat workaday song with some wonderful counterpoint harmonies. "Captain's Table" feels a bit Nick Drakeish meets Gordon Lightfoot meets Moody Blues. Lovely.
But "Reinstated" may just be my favorite track on the album; it stands out from the others. The horns are to DIE for! So retro with almost a Phillies-soul sound. Meanwhile "Cornish Town" is as folksy and harmonic as Simon and Garfunkel. Finally, "Daniella" is a pretty, pared-down acoustic song with some great finger picking.
I love Michael Head's distinctive brogue and their rich harmonies. I love and appreciate rock music that dares to include lots of strings. And MELODY. And I love albums that cover a wide gamut of instrumental styles and moods, as this one so nicely does. Lyrics booklets are appreciated too.
This is a beautifully orchestrated, imaginative, melodic album with a fresh seasidy feel to it. Pure pleasure.
