I bought this when it first came out and I was blown away at how good a recording it is.
In 1991, Zappa was chosen to be one of four featured composers at the Frankfurt Festival in 1992 (the others were John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Alexander Knaifel). Zappa was approached by the German chamber ensemble, Ensemble Modern, which was interested in playing his music for the event. Although ill, Zappa invited them to Los Angeles for rehearsals of new compositions and new arrangements of older material. In addition to being satisfied with the ensemble's performances of his music, Zappa also got along with the musicians, and the concerts in Germany and Austria were set up for Autumn that year. The Canadian choreographer Édouard Lock, the Canadian dancer Louise Lecavalier, and his company La La La Human Steps were part of the show. In September 1992, the concerts went ahead as scheduled, but Zappa could only appear at two in Frankfurt due to illness. At the first concert, he conducted the opening "Overture", and the final "G-Spot Tornado" as well as the theatrical "Food Gathering in Post-Industrial America, 1992" and "Welcome to the United States" (the remainder of the program was conducted by the ensemble's regular conductor Peter Rundel). The first concert was aired live by German pay TV channel Premiere, presented by the station's "Special" host Christian Eckert. Zappa received a 20-minute ovation. It would become his last professional public appearance, as the cancer was spreading to such an extent that he was in too much pain to enjoy an event that he otherwise found "exhilarating". Recordings from the concerts appeared on The Yellow Shark, Zappa's last release during his lifetime.
The posthumous album Everything Is Healing Nicely, released in 1999, contains recordings from around the same time, made in preparation for the performances documented on The Yellow Shark.

A dying man's statement

About 1 month after the cover picture was taken , Mr Zappa left us his last legacy. Who would have thought that it would be a tribute to his classical music heroes. There is no filler music, its a sheer work of art, but beware this one is for classical music lovers that are attracted to modern classical works. Yes this one is indeed worth acquiring before it goes out of print. Mastering and production is near state of the art.

Society's Gift to Zappa (and His to Us)

For most of his life Frank Zappa wanted to be a "serious" "classical" composer. Not only is his rock and fusion music often infused with influences of Varese and Webern but he wrote contemporary classical music throughout. The problem is he could never find anybody he felt was willing to put in the time or effort to play it the way he heard it in his head. Boulez was enough of a believer to conduct some of Zappa's music but Zappa believed even he didn't rehearse the pieces enough for the orchestra to get all of the rhythms right.
Then came The Yellow Shark Project initiated by the Ensemble Modern. They took a year to learn all of the intricacies of the music, not just getting all of the rhythms right, but the feel and emotion as well. Although critically ill, Zappa was able to attend the opening, conducting a few pieces, and hear his music the way he "envisioned" it. He also got to hear the thunderous applause and read the often-times conservative critics' rave reviews. It took him a life time, but he was finally considered a serious contemporary composer by the music establishment.
As Frank Zappa had a wide variety of influences, there is a wide variety of music on the CD, music which spans a good portion of his musical career. It includes everything from almost straight transcriptions of some of his rock songs that would have been at home on "Roxy and Elsewhere" to pieces for wind and string quartets that could have come from a traditionally trained late 20th century composer. Some of the reviewers here do a great job of expressing they type of music you will find here so I won't go into any more depth except to say you need to listen carefully to the music behind "Welcome to the United States" to appreciate Zappa's genius on it....
I have listened to quite a few rock artists' attempts at "contemporary concert music". With the exception of Zappa I don't feel any have been too successful. It is obvious that Frank understood and loved "modern classical" music. It was in his veins. In some ways I feel Frank Zappa's relationship to classical music as a rock musician was similar to George Gershwin's as a jazz musician.
Oh yes, everyone must hear this version of G-Spot Tornado...
