その名もsuite(組曲)である。

Transition, disco superlativo

Consigliatissimo.

A Necessary Posthumous Album

What to do with John Coltrane's posthumous records? At his death, it was announced that there were literally hours of unreleased music, all of it good. This turned out to be absolutely true, but it left a problem: how to release it? Should it be released in recorded order, or should an attempt be made to create albums of it? Many of these songs, in his usual fashion, had no titles, leaving Alice Coltrane to decide their names. Others came from sessions from which music HAD been issued, and that leaves the lingering question of why the unreleased pieces had been so. That is the case here, but thankfully this is an album well due that status: "album", like
Sun Ship
, not simply a collection of unreleased songs, like
Selflessness Featuring My Favorite Things
.
The session that created the vast majority of this album was on June 10, 1965. On that day, the Coltrane quartet recorded what appears to be a complete record: "Transition", the fifteen minute "energy music" title track, "Welcome", a five minute ballad (sometimes referred to as "the happy birthday song") in the suspended style that was associated with Coltrane pieces like "After the Rain", and a twenty-one minute "Suite", which was largely a rocket-blast of assertion, a sequence of "prayer and meditation" from the dark night of the soul. Why weren't these three pieces issued at the time? Because Coltrane was recording like crazy. This record was just one of over a dozen records recorded during that prolific year. Even still, it stands as unusually strong music, and in that regard we can thank Alice Coltrane and Ed Michel, who put this record together in 1970, creating an album by making a simple substitution.
As it happens, John had been so taken with "Welcome" that he'd combined it with two other unrelated songs for one of the last albums released in his lifetime, Kulu Se Mama . That inclusion may have caused some skepticism about releasing these other tracks, but quality is not an issue: Coltrane greatly wanted to release the Juno Lewis composed title track to "Kulu", but needed more music for the album. For this album, Alice solved the problem of the missing ballad by sticking the similar sounding "Dear Lord", from the May 26th session, in place of "Welcome". This track features the great Roy Haynes on drums in place of Elvin Jones, and it serves the purpose that may have been intended - to be a suspended bridge between the full-on energy assault of the title track and raging night that is the "Suite". The three together make a perfect record, and this version, with crisp, new sound, is the best way to have it. It's also worth noting that this release is a RETURN to the original running order - GRP released an "amended version" in the nineties when it recalibrated some of Coltrane's later work, sticking "Kulu Se Mama" with other long pieces of 1965 and moving "Welcome" back to this running order, but also removing "Dear Lord" (which was put with the rest of the Haynes pieces) and adding the sax/drums duet "Vigil". Nothing wrong with those pieces, of course, but in this case the original album deserves some respect. All of these cuts are prime Coltrane, and its great to have it back together. Admittedly, some of Coltrane's posthumous records are not necessary choices by themselves - the music may be better heard as "bonus tracks" or, as is the case with the Newport music, with other live sessions. But, for Coltrane from this period, this stands tall next to anything not called A Love Supreme , and needs to be in the collection of every serious Coltrane listener.

A Transition between A Love Supreme and the late period
Even by his own standards 1965 saw a staggering output from Coltrane and his Classic Quartet much of which only saw the light of day years on. The four tracks here were recorded on two sessions on 10 and 16 June 1965 a few weeks before Coltrane's famous performance at Newport. "Welcome" and "Vigil" appeared on "Kulu Se Mama" but sound more at home here in what is a very coherent release in developing and refining such albums as "Crescent" and "A Love Supreme". As has often been remarked, Coltrane was always in a state of development that "Transition" could be the name for countless of his releases but here the moniker is peculiarly apt in the last year of the Classic Quartet's existence.
"Transition" is often overlooked which is all the more odd when it should appeal to all fans - it is not nearly as challenging as the Post Classic Quartet releases but is still sufficiently abrasive to appeal to devotees of "Live in Japan" and "Interstellar Space" for example. All four musicians are on blistering form - "Welcome" is a truly beautiful encapsulation of peace while the title track see the four musicians fully engaged.
All in all, criminally overlooked and very highly recommended.
