Opening with 'The Plastic Age' this is a swirling, mesmerising, soundscape of the future and really shows off Horns arranging and producing skills. It also happens to be a great song. Next up is the aforementioned 'Video Killed the Radio Star' and unless you were living under a stone when this was released in 1979 then you know how good this is. 'Kid Dynamo' would always be hard pressed to go up after VKTRS and this is one of the weakest songs (for me) on the album. Although the chorus is catchy it does not have the same impact as the first two tracks. 'I Love You Miss Robot' ends side one and this is a personal favourite. It's understated yet masterfully arranged with a use of major chords for the chorus sliding into minor chords for the verses when you realise that he is paying to have phone sex with an automated voice.
Side two opens with the third single 'Clean Clean'. Probably ahead of its time when released and just about denting the UK charts, this is the closest the album gets to being synthesized punk. You can imagine this song with just drums, guitar and bass (much like the Bruce Woolley version) and being harder hitting than the album version. 'Elstree' - I love this track. The song flows and nothing jars and it is a wistful tribute to one of the great British film studios. 'Astroboy (And the Proles on Parade)' has a dreamy substance to it and when closing ones eyes, you get taken on a journey. I prefer the music of the verses to the chorus but I still think its great as whole. The album ends with 'Johnny on the Monorail' and its possibly the most straightforward of all the songs and therefore the least interesting. Again, it's the production that elevates it and rounds off an album which for me, is one of the most underrated albums of the 1980s.
If you are a fan of the 80s and want to hear where some of the styles in '81, 82 & '83 came from, this is the album for you.
