1970's Piano! is one of Nina Simone's favourite albums, and it is easy to understand why. It's the simplicity of her rich, mahogany tones, together with virtuoso piano playing and intimate songs on love and human resilience. Simone takes the saccharine out of easy-listening standards and imprints them with her distinctive voice. "Seems I'm Never Tired Lovin' You" becomes a monumental love song, complete with crashing chords, while even Jonathan King's trite "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" sounds philosophical. By comparison, 1967's Silk & Soul (including some bonus b-sides) is more orchestrated urban soul. Despite the commercial genre, Simone manages to give each song a twist. After listening to the rowdy "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to be Free", for instance, the theme to Barry Norman's TV show will never be the same again. --Lucy O'Brien
