Bellissimo.
This is a pretty straightforward album that showcases what can best be described as melodic grindcore. There are sudden tempo changes and the band sounds good whether playing slow or fast.
The vocalist Sylvian Houde keeps listeners of balance with his screaming, grunting, and gasping. At times he doesnt stay in pace with the band. This actually works in their favour by making the band sound frenetic or "crazy". The band are tight, they play grindcore as if they were a progressive rock band.
To me this is 5 star album. I think allmusicguide need to put it in their rock cannon alongside Led Zepplin's Houses of The Holy. But objectively I guess I'd rate it a 4 stars. A little note about the 3 different pressings of this album that I am aware of: Sorcery/Mystical Gate combines their first ep/demo with their first album release. This was first released in Germany in 1998 on Nuclear Blast. It was then released in Russia in 2003 on a label called Irond, and then remastered in 2004 on Nuclear Blast and released in Germany. I've never heard the one from 2004.
The point of talking about the above is this; I have owned and listened to both the 1998 version and the 2003 Irond pressing. I recently purchased the Irond version because I was unhappy with the condition of the 1998 version when it came in the mail (the digipack had a tear in it from a fingernail and the plastic tray thing that holds the cd was cracked, totally unacceptable condition for something as rare and as expensive as an album like this). Anyway, when I listened to the Irond pressing of the album, it was noticeable stale sound to it. It sounded no better than if I were to listen to it on youtube or on itunes.
So, if you decide to get this album, do your research and make sure you are purchasing the 1998 digipak version and not the 2003 Irond pressing. I've never heard the 2004 Nuclear Blast pressing of this cd so I have no opinion on that.
