カーラ・ブレイがNYのフュージョン・グループ、スタッフと組んだアルバムで4人の管
楽器奏者はカーラ・ブレイ・バンドのメンバー。1976年の作品。特別編成のセッション
ということからか演奏されているのはカーラ・ブレイのベスト・ソングスという趣で、
意外な組み合わせながら内容的にはとても面白く充実したアルバムになっている。カー
ラ・ブレイの曲はポール・ブレイによる演奏が一番よく知られているのだろうが、ポー
ル・ブレイの理知的で時にフリージャズ的な解釈に比べてここではとてもソウルフル。
カーラのメロディ・メイカーぶりが前面に出ている。特にバラード曲ではとてもメロウ
な演奏を聴かせており普段の彼女の音楽からはちょっと想像するのが難しいほどセクシ
ーだ。ラズウェル・ラッド等管楽器奏者の演奏も素晴らしい。カーラのオルガンとリチ
ャード・ティーのピアノ、エレピとの絡みなど聴いていてゾクゾクする。カーラ・ブレ
イに近寄り難いコワモテのイメージを持っているひとにはまずこのアルバムをお薦めし
たい。

Buen disco de Carla Bley, pero que está sobrevalorado en algunas webs de crítica musical. No es un disco esencial. Efectivamente es un disco en el que una excelente rítmica apoyado en buenos vientos, hace que la ejecución de los temas sea inmaculada. Sin embargo hay una repetición de la fórmula para todos los temas del disco ( grabado para ECM en 1976) lo que al final no deja de crear la sensación de que resulta algo repetitivo en la concepcion y ejecución de cada tema musical. Puede ser también que a ello ayude la formación en noneto y que en una formación de big band ( de 12 músicos en adelante) el resultado hubiese sido otro.

It's not that I don't like 'Dinner Music' but it could have been so much better. Carla Bley is a great composer as the other reviewers have noted & she's not afraid to take her music in directions that some jazz composers aren't willing to. This album is effectively a mix between her regular horn section & the top groove players in New York at the time & unfortunately whoever mixed it missed a trick. The New Yorkers, Stuff, were some of the top session musicians in the US at the time. Steve Gadd was the drummer that everyone wanted to play like (after they'd heard him on '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover') & was all about laying a groove down, Richard Tee was the go-to fender rhodes & hammond player that gave soul to whatever he played. Eric Gale & Cornell Dupree were heavily in demand for their soulful, blues drenched playing as well as unparalleled rhythm guitar work. The problem with 'Dinner Jazz' is that it sounds like the jazzers were embarrassed by the groovers & as a result they put Steve Gadd's drumming ridiculously low in the mix. It means you don't really feel the depth of the groove & without groove/swing there's nothing to really latch onto. Eric Gale gets the odd feature but most of the solos are from the horn players. Fair enough, as they're good players & in her band, but without the groove happening it doesn't work for me.
