Pavarotti is the vocal star of the show. But reserve some of your attention for Mirella Freni, a terrific singer. Her Mimi is the emotional center of the story ( it’s called ‘La Boheme’ not ‘Les Bohemes’ for a reason. From her first appearance, that character drives the story, and Freni carries it off so well.
The second act should be a master class in ensemble performance. The third act could stand on its own as a fourth of Puccini’s one-act masterpieces.
Get the tissues ready. You will need them in triplicate. Wow. What a cast. Pavarotti is just sublime. Equally matched by Freni, Quilico and the rest. Finest voices i have ever heard. This is the best opera recording I have ever seen. The score is to die for and the setting is superb. I was emotionally a wreck at the end of this journey. But, boy, was it worth it!!! All credit to everyone involved in this production
Explication, j'avais vu l'opéra il y ades années et ai voulu offrir le DVD le représentant à un amateur de Très Bel Canto !!! Pavarotti et Freni ....... comment faire mieux????
This is an excellent presentation of the very best of all operas. I have listened to the sublime 1973 Von Karajan recording with Freni and Pavarotti for years and, while this video version does not reach their spectacular heights as younger artists, it is wonderful to have both of them in good voice and on the screen. I agree with the reviewer who noticed Pavarotti's less emotional performance here; he had sung this role so many times that a little less tension has to be expected, but he is still very good. I am very happy to have this video and I have already seen it four times. It gets better each time I see it.
