最近のというかちょっと前の4heroやジャザノバがやってんのってもろこれですね。

モダンすぎるというか非常に今っぽい音楽なのが不思議、
ちょっとびっくりしました。

正直本家のこのアルバムのほうがよりモダンでグルービーで好みです。

ホレスアンディーの70Sのダブアルバム聞いたときも
すでにこの時代にこれやってたんだー！　すげー！って関心したもんだけど、
このアルバムもそれぐらいの衝撃です。

全く色あせてないというか今の時代の方があってるんでは？

RARE GROOVEという枠に入るアルバムは巷に様々な「名盤」が溢れかえっています。
それぞれ確かに名盤だけれども順位が存在するとすれば確実にこのアルバムは上から数えたほうが早いでしょう。
まずワンパンチくらうのがひとつも捨て曲が一つも無い。これって単純にすごいと思います。
次の右フックはクオリティの高さ。これはもう聴いてくださいとしか言えませんが
このアルバムに出会い何百回とリピートしてるはずでも未だに飽きません。
最後の左アッパーのたぶん本人だと思いますがここで本人がコメントして下さっているという事でK.O.です。

5つ星のうち4.0 まさにレア・グルーヴ！　当時ロイ・エアーズのギタリストなんて気にしてなかった。

70年代、80年代にフージョン、クロスオーバーを聴いていたものとしては、若者がレア・グルーヴなんて言って当時のマイナーな音源を有り難がっているのが、うれしいような、こそばゆいような気がしていました。
実を言うと、ジェームス・メイスンなんて、往年の渋いおじさん俳優しか知りませんでした。
実を言うと、ナラダ・マイケル・ウォルデンがドラムを叩いているので、しかも未だメジャーになる前のドラマーとして活躍していた70年代のものだったので、手に入れました。
何となく、ナラダ・マイケル・ウォルデンのドラムが好きです。
アース・ウインド・ファイアーのモーリス・ホワイトもドラマーとして好きなんですが・・・
関係ないですね。
ロイ・エアーズのギタリストなんて、ロイ・エアーズよりレアだ。
ナラダ・マイケル・ウォルデン以外のメンバーは誰も知りません。
捨て曲がないというよりも、目立つ曲はないのですが、全体的にセンスのいい曲でまとまっていて、アルバム通しで聴いて楽しめます。
実はインスト好きなのですが、これくらいのボーカルでしたら邪魔になりません。
何だか一時期のインコグニトっぽいんですが、インココグニトは確信的にこの頃の雰囲気を再現したんですね。

本当に素晴らしい！特に「GOOD THING」は涙ものの高揚感！本当にセンスいいです。このアルバムはマービン・ゲイのワッツ・ゴーイング・オンばりに一家に一枚です。個人的にはかなりツボです。

全曲どれをとってもヒップでかっちょいいジァズ・ファンクばかりがつまったアルバム。ｓｌｉｃｋ　ｃｉｔｙ，ｇｏｏｄ　ｔｈｉｎｇ，ｓｗｅｅｔ　ｐｏｗｅｒ　ｙｏｕｒ　ｅｍｂｒａｃｅなどがよくジャズ・ファンク系のコンピレーションに入っているが、彼の唯一のＣＤ化されたこのアルバムは絶対買って損はしないであろう。全体的に女性ヴォーカルがフィーチュアされて、曲調としては、ＲＯＹ　ＡＹＥＲＳの楽曲に似ているような感じであり、コレ系の音が好きな人にはたまらないであろう。

This is one of those obscure gems that I never would have discovered if not for Amazon's "Recommended" feature. I can't remember what I bought that triggered this CD to show up on my Recommended List, but turn up it did, and I paid attention to the other glowing reviews of this album and ordered the CD. Wow and WOW! Very impressed with this one!

I have a few albums by Roy Ayers, but I have to admit that I never paid attention to the fact that James Mason played in his band. No doubt, having played with Ayers influenced Mason's own sound a bit, but listening to this album I hear many layers of sounds and influences. One minute I'm reminded of Lonnie Liston Smith or Dexter Wansel, the next it might trigger a George Duke moment, or when the impress guest vocalist, Clarice Taylor, is singing, there might be a Rufus and Chaka Khan flashback. All good reference points.

But from the man himself, this is what James Mason says in the album's liner notes: "For making the music that has inspired and shaped my musical values over the years, special thanks to The Crusaders, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Joseph Zawinul, Stevie Wonder, the Pointer Sisters, and Stanley Clarke. And for the learning experience working as a member of his band afforded me, Thank You to Roy Ayers."

Mason was a guitarist in Ayers' band, but on this album he also plays organ, piano, and synthesizers, giving the songs a very rhythmic and propulsive feel. Grooves galore indeed! Clarice Taylor's vocals are very soulful, plus some sax and congas give the arrangements on some tunes an extra funky vibe as well.

Whenever I play this CD in my bookshop someone will ask me what is playing, usually remarking about how good the music sounds. And I agree. This album has a very distinctive vibe to it. One comment that seems to be consistent among the other reviews on this page is how "under-produced" and "minimalist" or "homemade" this album sounds. Huh? I don't hear that "technical shortcoming" whatsoever. Granted, this was recorded in 1977, but to my ears it all sounds very "full" and "complete", nothing homemade or demo-like in the least.

Don't be scared by words like "disco" or "minimalist" ... the album is a true gem. If you are looking for some rare 1970s grooves of high quality, don't miss this one. The liner notes call this album "a timeless classic" and I would definitely agree with that.

It has been said in other reviews...this is jazz-funk of the highest class. No weak tracks at all, excellent musicianship and a word of praise as well for the vocalist Clarice Taylor. Had this been released 7-8 years later in the UK or 3 years previously in the US we'd all know about it. Good to see the man himself acknowledging fans of the album in the UK here on this page. If you drop by again Mr Mason let us know what you're up to now?

Excellent. I tracked down the rare vinyl release on obscure label Chiaruscuro in the early 80s for the jazz funk anthem Sweet Power. This Jap CD re-issue includes extra versions of a Sweet Power plus the 2 tracks on his 12" single release a while later. The whole album is just superb. Every track a gem. One of my favourite albums ever.
