If Heaven Could Find Meは一度聴いたら忘れないような情感豊かなメロディライン。
 5曲目How Much I Feelはブルーアイド・ソウル。 THE EAGLESのPeaceful, Easy Feelingに通じる曲。
 9曲目Not as You WereはAORの王道的な曲。

"...that I'll ever see life beyond L.A. is dyin'..."

At Christmas 1978, when I was just 10 years old, I was given a copy of the original vinyl LP - Ambrosia's third album (and first for Warners, after two for the old 20th Century Fox label), Life Beyond L.A. Then, as now, I thought it was a bit more sophisticated than what your average 10-year-old just really starting to get seriously into pop music would have wanted to listen to. Ambrosia, who prior to this album were the quartet of David Pack, Joe Puerta, Christopher North and Burleigh Drummond, had tended toward some rather progressive-rock-styled material, with some elements of radio-friendly (by mid '70s standards, at any rate) pop to gain them airplay and record sales. Sometime in 1977, however, North (the band's keyboardist) quit the group, which seemed to take some of the proggy elements out of their music and turn them more poppy.

Life Beyond L.A. is a somewhat different album from their '75 eponymous debut and Somewhere I've Never Travelled in that respect; that said, many of the progressive elements remain, as there are some jazzy textures on the deep album tracks like "Apothecary" (a slightly dark song about experimenting with mind-altering substances) and even moderate world music (e.g. African) flavouring on "Living in Angola," which is also easily the breeziest track on an album otherwise full of often world-weary ("Art Beware" - "It's all been done/There's nothing new under the sun/What a waste of my time...") and melancholy ("How Much I Feel," which was the hit single from this album, making it to the top 5 in Billboard; "Heart to Heart," with its subtle violin and lyrics about loneliness and despair; the darkish closing track "Ready for Camarillo," referring to California's biggest mental hospital) moods. The title cut itself displays some very jazz-fusiony hooks as well. Perhaps the darkness in the lyrics is most easily betrayed by the cover art - a photo of the band standing in what appears to be a darkened disco club, which also rather dates the album. Indeed, Life Beyond L.A. is an album of its time.

For all of that, however, I actually liked this album when I was 10 - which would suggest that, even then, my tastes were more sophisticated than the average tween's would be, and it was the first pop album I ever owned. At nearly 45, I still like it, and now it has been expanded to include a concert performance from around the time of the album's release, featuring four cuts from Life Beyond L.A. and various tracks from the two prior albums, including the Vonnegut-inspired "Nice, Nice, Very Nice," all of it displaying Messrs. Pack, Puerta and Drummond as a tight, professional unit. At the same time, I would not recommend this album as the one to start with - better, in fact, to begin with the first 2 albums (which have been made available as a twofer from the same company that produced this Deluxe Edition, Friday Music), then explore this one. Together, you'll have the strongest albums in Ambrosia's admittedly brief catalogue - just 5 albums in total, but worth seeking out if this is your thing.

Wow, this is a superb CD package. The CD Life Beyond LA is terrific all by itself. Prefer earlier Ambrosia but the bar was set so high that, although this CD may have a miss or two, it still ranks all 5 stars. But the LIVE CD is truly a work of art!! As you listen you learn how important and how dynamic the keyboards were to the Ambrosia sound. But, as important, the vocals, by David and in the multi-layered harmonies, are really excellent. You can hear the talent and if you check out the few videos that exist on the web, you see that this band was as committed to the explosive live sound as any band, minus the too-flashy lights and other unnecessary pyrotechnics. Great energy!! Ambrosia is... Underrated? Under appreciated? Absolutely, and maybe it's in part because the progressive multi-instrumental sound and the pop-harmonies spread the band too wide in a way. The record companies may not have known how best to market, or they tried to over-market in the wrong genres. Some jazz, some mellow pop/rock, some in-your-face, blast-the-speakers rock; this band put together almost too much sound in what seems like a brief career. In any event, sure wish there had been more Ambrosia music. Loved Joey with Bruce Hornsby, Love David with his solo and combo projects including the Napa CD, and appreciate the terrific musical work from the others, especially Chris. And glad there's still some touring going on. Thanks for this fantastic music, gentlemen!!

This is an excellent album. It's a departure from their earlier sound, which is much more progressive/symphonic rock. Probably pressured by their record company to make something more accessible, they put together this record. The big hit here is How Much I Feel, which is Ambrosia's equivalent of Styx's Babe. Their first all-out, radio-friendly, pop meets R&B love song, this song pretty much made their career and put them on the charts and carved out a place in the pop pantheon for them. Their next album, ONE EIGHTY, would take them even further in that direction. On this album they still have some artistic cred and they score with Apothecary; one of the classiest, most melancholy jazz/pop songs I've ever heard. The title track is also great with a dated but strong stadium-rock sound that still has a lot of that progressive attitude from their earlier work. Even "How Much I Feel" has a different, artsy sound to it that really separates it from the rest of the music from that era. For the most part this album is a very enjoyable listen with many very original and creative moments on it that are sure to please fans of art-rock. It's too accessible to label it prog-rock, so some fans of the genre might find it too simplistic. I've loved this album for a long time and still listen to it sometimes.

As far as this "Deluxe" version goes, the remastering is marginally better than the 2000 version. The live cd is good but not outstanding. It's a great way to listen to what the band sounded like back in those days, and they are very exacting and good as I expected. I'm not a big fan of live albums so it wasn't a selling point for me. I bought this for the remastering and I wasn't exactly blown away. If you don't already own the 2000 remastered version of this album, then by all means get it. It's a great period album that will pleasantly surprise fans of that era of music. If you want to listen to Ambrosia at their absolute artsy best, then get their eponymous first album.

5.0 GREAT ALBUM - GREAT LIVE BONUS DISC!!

Sitting here listening to this album for the millionth time, and thinking about how truly amazing this band is. They are so much MORE than those love songs that have kept them going all these years. Granted, they are great songs and have been bread and butter to the band, but their music is so much more. I have enjoyed everything they have recorded, but one only has to listen to this one and realize what amazing musicians they are.. The studio disc is brilliant, and while I have had a tape of the second disc for many many many years, I had to make the purchase to have an official release of it. It has been aired on FM stations several times through the years, and if it were just any broadcast I would not have been so keen to buy. But this show is a great performance and well worth the purchase. Now if only some other live shows would make their way to the public as bonus with other releases.. (Would especially find a live version of SHAPE I'M IN or anything from ROAD ISLAND an instant treasure!) KUDOS to FRIDAY MUSIC for this release.... Back to Angola ------
