Repressing. Digitally remastered edition of this lost classic of the Progressive era. Released on the short lived Greenwich Gramophone label in 1972, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as King Crimson and Gentle Giant but was more than a mere clone of these bands. Evolving from the equally excellent band Web (whose album I Spider is a classic of the genre), the musicianship on the album was excellent and keyboard player Dave Lawson's compositions were groundbreaking and memorable. Sadly the group disbanded shortly after the release of the record resulting in limited sales. However, the influence of the album was not lost as both Dave Lawson and Tony Reeves soon formed Greenslade with Dave Greenslade, effectively taking up the musical mantle laid down by Samurai. Esoteric.

ジャケットからは想像できない傑作

多くの音楽ファンはジャケットが素晴らしいと中身も素晴らしい事が多いと考えている人が多いと思うが、世の中には例外もあるという事を実感させる1枚。

英国のジャズロック・グループのWebの3rd(I Spider)に参加したDave Lawson(kb,vo)が中心になったSamuraiの唯一のアルバムだが、音を聴くと実質的にはWebの第4作と考えた方が良い。　なぜグループ名をSamuraiとしたのか不明だが、この趣味が良いとは思えないジャケットはグループ名と関連がありそうで、イラストのモデルはJohn Lennonと小野洋子と思われるが詳細は不明。
このジャケットとグループ名なので敬遠してしまう人も多いと思うが内容はジャケットからは全く想像できないジャズロック風の傑作となっている。

　実はこの作品は過去にリアルタイムでキングから国内盤LPが発売された事があるが、現物を見たのは今まで1度きりで一体何枚売れたのだろうか。英オリジナル盤LPもGreenwichというマイナー・レーベルから出ていてプレスが少なく廃盤市場にも滅多に出てこないレア盤となっている。
なおWebはD.Lawson加入前の2作と3rdは別グループと言えるほど音の傾向が違うので、Webの3rdが好きな人は先にこのSamuraiを聴く事をお薦めしたい。（D.Lawsonは他にGreensladeやStackridgeにも参加しているが内容は本作及びWeb3rdが群を抜いている）

Although familiar with the wonderful Web album 'I Spider' I had never heard this follow on and I cannot understand why Samurai have been so overlooked for 30 odd years (thank you esoteric for your essential and exciting reissues), it's brilliant. The music is so cool, consisting of intelligent and challenging jazz/rock compositions, sometimes a little like a laid back Gentle Giant. For me the absolute stand out track is 'Face in the mirror' which has a spaced out backward guitar solo in the middle sandwiched by Dave Lawson's fine vocalese singing.
This album needs listening to in depth to fully appreciate their special sound. For me it was totally rewarding and addictive.

Samurai was essentially a continuation of Web, who in 1970 released the album I Spider on Polydor. That album marked Dave Lawson's first recordings. Web did release two albums prior to I Spider with an American vocalist John L. Watson with Fully Interlocking (1968) and Theraphosa Blondi (1970), which are said to be pop/psychedelic offerings. After I Spider, sax player Tom Harris left, and for some reason the band was now called Samurai (I suspect Tom Harris had the rights to the Web name, but I can't be certain). They brought in two new wind players with Tony Roberts and Fay. Aside from these two new guys, the lineup was the same with vocalist/keyboardist Dave Lawson, guitarist Tony Edwards, bassist Tony Eaton, drummer Kenny Beveridge, and drummer/percussionist Lennie Wright. The band was now recording for a far more obscure label, Greenwich. Original LPs are extremely difficult to come by, but luckily its been reissued on CD. I have the Italian reissue on the Akarma label, which comes in a digipak, but does not include those live bonus cuts like earlier reissues did.

Really, I have to say Samurai is by far the finest album Dave Lawson ever played on. His singing doesn't seem so strained or high-pitched as on those Greenslade albums. The album is mellower, overall than I Spider, and there's a stronger King Crimson feel. "More Rain" is a nice, pleasant number that brings to mind Jade Warrior, especially the flutes. "Maudie James" continues in that nice, early '70s jazzy prog manner, while "Give a Little Love" tends to be more rocking. "As I Dried My Tears Away" is a great closer with lots of creative passages. This is really one of the great lost gems of British prog rock. This was the last we heard from Web/Samurai. Most of the guys had simply disappeared (likely to their day jobs), with one big exception, Dave Lawson, of course, who found his fame and fortune with Greenslade.

This album comes highly recommended!

Vous êtes déçus que Web soit mort après « I spider » ? Attendez j'ai une bonne nouvelle ! Il a ressuscité sous le nom de Samurai pour un seul album (sniff) ... Mais quel album !! Tom Harris, l'excellent saxophoniste, est parti, mais il a été remplacé par deux autres musiciens : Tony Roberts (sax, clarinette et flûte) et Don Fay (sax et flûte). La musique reste globalement la même, mais les titres -toujours très ambitieux- sont devenus plus concis et mélodiques. Les deux saxophonistes s'entendent à merveille lors de leurs échanges solistes, alors que l'orgue de Lawson mène la danse (« saving it up for so long »). Les flûtes, les congas et le vibraphone confèrent un côté doux et inventif, quand Lawson module sa voix à la perfection (« more rain »). On peut être allergique à son timbre de voix souvent murmuré et parfois maniéré, mais force est de reconnaître que le style musical de Samurai est plus adapté à son chant que celui de Greenslade plus tard. Avec « maudie james », on se délecte d'un jazz-rock latino (les congas toujours) où les dissonances à la Gentle Giant ne sont pas absentes. Un sax solo ouvre « holy padlock », au riff cuivré simple mais irrésistible. C'est fou comme la présence d'un saxophoniste supplémentaire a enrichi le son du groupe, à la manière de If (voire ma rétrospective de cet excellent groupe cuivré dans le Koid9 n°71). Sur « give me little love », plus rock c'est la guitare (Tony Edwards), assisté de l'orgue, qui semble avoir pris le pouvoir, mais le sax n'est pas en reste lors des solos. L'album se termine par deux titres plus longs, plus dans l'esprit de Web : les évanescents et torturés « face in the mirror » (6'45) et « as I dried the tears away » (8'13). On navigue dans un univers proche des pages les plus aventureuses de Gentle Giant. Je vous conseille de découvrir « Samurai », moins difficile d'accès, avant « I spider », qui s'imposera de lui-même...

Have only played this through about 5 times, so needs a bit more time getting into. First impression is actually 4.5 stars. Don't think it's quite got the edge that the Web album "I Spider" has. As i say, bit more time needed methinks.
Disappointing is that there's no extras etc. Running time is a meagre 36 minutes, so it's expensive in that context. Decent booklet though.
