London-based Max Tundra was known as Ben by his mum, Mrs Jacobs, who probably never expected him to grow up into an avant-garde kitchen-sink multi-instrumentalist composer of wilfully bizarre music. Evidence of Tundra's well-developed sense of humour comes from the fact that he has released a single from Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be,entitled "Cakes". In just over three minutes, it whirls past a collage of Beatlesque rhythms, primitive synths, scratches and jagged stabs of piano against a jazz drum pattern, followed by a cute lounge guitar, which gives way to the sound of a CD which has become stuck because of dirt on the disc, hotly pursued by a mad trumpeter battling with a military drum ensemble until somebody climbs into a car, starts up and drives off. Generally, the most obvious reference points are Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart without the vocals, although there are occasional reflective moments reminiscent of very early Kraftwerk ambient noodling, before they'd discovered the metronomic beat that revolutionised dance music. It's not for everybody (not on this planet anyway) but those who do like it will love it. --Johnny Black
