This genuinely inspired collection of rarities gives us a real insight into a homegrown UK reggae scene which emerged in the mid-seventies around a handful of young, cultural messengers. They boldly emerged from the shadow of their Jamaican counterparts to carve out their own reputations by releasing singles--which sometimes imitated JA 7" pre-releases and by playing live. Bands such as Tottenham's Black Slate, Southall's Misty In Roots, South Londonケs Matumbi (led by Sufferer sound-man/bassist Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell), Birmingham's Steel Pulse or the young lions of Ladbroke Grove, Aswad. They all addressed the issues of the day in their own fashion and won devoted multi-racial followings. Tunes such as Black Slate's "Sticksman", Pablo Gad's "Hard Times" (original steppers), Misty's "Six One Penny", Aswad's "Not Our Wish", Lion Youth's "Rat A Cut Bottle" and the Regulars "Where Is Jah" take us back to Ron & Nanda's legendary 100 Club live sessions while African Stone "Run Rasta Run", the African Brother's "Gimme African Love" and Tabby Cat Kelly's title track drop this writer back to the Java record store in East London, run by drummer Jah Bunny and bassist Lloyd, who both played on several cuts here. The music here is sweet and a portion of these musicians are still plying their trade (and winning Grammy nominations). Tune into the original sound of Black Britain. Paul Bradshaw
