For me, this is the best drum and bass album ever made, and by a long way. Other Bukem albums are great, in particular 'Journey Inwards' is another favourite of mine. But this is the most atmospheric, spaced out, absorbing D'n'B offering I know of.
Bukem's take on D'n'B is quite distinct. He has very clear jazz influences; more prominent on 'Earth' and 'Journey Inwards' than on Logical Progression, but in Logical Progression we witness his very best adoption of atmospheric ambient music.
It's difficult to pick out stand out tunes, but 'one and only', 'so long' and 'airtight' are probably the pick of a truly excellent selection. It's smart without being cold, sensual without being cheesy, atmospheric whilst remaining astonishingly accessible and engaging. Like what Michael Mayer's 'Immer' did for minimal, and Dj Tiesto's 'In Search of Sunrise' did for trance, Bukem showed that Drum and Bass can be intelligent, filled with heart and soul, and be every bit as captivating as music performed with "real" instruments. It is, quite simply, a work of musical mastery.
Bukem has released many mix albums now, which display in varying degrees a spacey/jazzy take on drum and bass. He remains my favourite D'n'B dj and producer and I hope we can look forward to many, many more years to come of his hypnotic but warm and sensual style.
Now I'm a BIG fan of LTJ and have 4 of his CDs, but NONE of them come anywhere near this one. Hands down, this is the best CD he's EVER done!!!!!! On the other CDs of his that I have I have only a select few that I'm willing to play over and over again. Just to clarify, I consider a song good if I'm want to hear it over and over again and/or I bob my head to it. Another criteria I have in considering a song good is if it plays in my head a lot. This CD has me bobbing my head to EACH AND EVERY song on it so I KNOW it's fabulous. I like the fact that it has a lot of songs written LTJ himself. What's even better is they are the best of the best he's ever done. I've heard a lot of LTJ's songs and (unfortunately) theres quite a few that I don't like but on Logical Progression he definitely picked the creme de la creme. He has definitely put on wax music of caliber to rival his PHENOMENAL live sets. I pray one day he will return to play a set at my fave club, Necto, and play these songs as part as part of it!!!!
This is an excellent comp of mid 90's drum and bass, when it was just starting to become popular. Bukem was one of the early stars of the genre, the "superstar dj" of a thousand club nights who helped popularize it. This double cd is typical of his sets at the time, and flows well from track to track and also creating an overall vibe with subtle mood changes along the way. If you are into dance and rave culture, especially if you are a 90's kid, get this.
