ピエロのジャケットが印象的な86年の名作1st「 Life's Hard & Then You Die 」に比べてあまり語られることのないの2nd。
確かに1stは「Driving Away From Home (Jim's Tune)」のシングルヒットもあり、ジャングリーなギターポップとしても十分に魅力的な名盤ではありました。
しかし、この90年発表の2ndも実にいいです。
前作を発表後。中心人物の一人だったヘンリー・プリーストマン（g、key）がクリスチャンズを結成するために脱退し、音楽的には確かに変化が感じられ、
パッと聴いた感じでは、前作より内省的で、ある意味地味な印象を最初は持つかと思いますが、インパクトはなくとも、聴くほどに味が出るスルメ盤となっています。
同じ通好みなバンド／ブルーナイルの初期にあったようなアコースティックな作風の中に、静かなる打ち込みを絶妙にブレンドさせているのも上手いです。
実際ブルーナイルにも深く関わっていた準メンバーのようだったカラム・マルコムも本作に参加しており、その質感に共通点を感じるのも当然かと思います。
決してコマーシャルなアルバムではないけれど、忘れられないタイプの2ndアルバムです。

前作“Life's Hard And Then You Die”から４年後の、1990年に発表された、イッツ・イマテリアルの２枚目となるアルバムである。前作の時点で、すでに音楽的な要の存在だったヘンリー・プリーストマンは脱退し（クリスチャンズに加入）、残されたジョン・キャンベルとジャーヴィス・ホワイトヘッドの２人で制作された。エレクトロニクスを多用しながらも、アクースティックな音の感触を持つという、彼らの特色は本作でも踏襲されているが、（前作もそうであったが）音の華やかさ・カラフルさはますます減退し、水墨画のように、音の色合いの濃淡のみで世界を表現する、というような境地に達している。これ１曲で、というキャッチーなメロディーには欠けるが、作品を通しで聴いていると、じわじわと効いてきて、ゆっくりとその音世界に浸ることができる。歌詞はオトコの情けなさを綴ったものが多く、身につまされる感もあり･･･

この作品の後は、彼らは現在まで音信不通になってしまうわけだが（解散した？）、この作品の発表当時は、まさしくマッドチェスターの流行時だったから、彼らのようにダンサブルなリズムに乗れない（乗らない）バンドにとって、風向きは非常に厳しかったことだろう。復活はあるのだろうか。

Posseggo da anni il loro primo cd e lo ho sempre considerato un dei più belli della mia cd teca, mi sono persino domandato se avessero fatto qualche altro disco..poi poco tempo fa girando per le pagine dei cd di Amazon ho scoperto l'esistenza di questo album...disco molto meditativo riflessivo da ascoltare con molta attenzione meno ritmato del precedente e quindi più maturo...però allo stesso tempo straordinario.

Like another It's Immaterial reviewer I read on Amazon, I too bought Life's Hard and Then You Die for £5.99 from Our Price (Peterborough in my case....) There must have been an offer on at the time. It's without doubt one of my favourite albums, but I missed out on getting a copy of "Song" and regrettably, until this week, didn't take the time or trouble to see if it was re-issued. So big thanks to Cherry Red, and in an oblique way, my sister in law, who got me tickets to see The Christians in Shrewsbury last week, which led to me digging out Life's Hard so I could listen to the sublime "Ed's Funky Diner"....and after a few glasses of Merlot, and a late night hunt around Amazon, hey presto, Song arrived at my door.

It is VERY rare that I play an album over and over on first purchasse, but I am currently grateful that my commute involves a 40 minute drive through autumnal Bedfordshire lanes, so I can enjoy, in my own "Space", this stunning work. I am not going to single out individual songs, because that would be like admiring the bottom corner of an art masterpiece, rather than the full picture.

Take this album as a whole, and love it.

This album is an understated masterpiece. The songs flow effortlessly into each other, so much so that you can just listen to it over and again. The attraction is not so much the songs as the overall sound and ambience. It's all about the atmospherics and the way sounds shape and shift moods. I was going to write that, unlike It's Immaterial's debut album, "Life's Hard and Then You Die", there are no standouts here, just this continuous "sound". But there are standouts. "Heaven Knows", "Homecoming", "Life on the Hill". But they are laid back, effortless. I read that this album sunk without trace, and the band too. Which is a real shame. Because both album and band are cool, quirky, intelligent, and quietly subversive. This is very sophisticated pop that should have been rewarded with greater recognition. I'd encourage people to rediscover this gem and, in the process, build an audience for the release of this legendary third album that has yet to see the light of day.

This is just the most beautiful album. It conjures up images of lonely windswept beaches, lazy endless clouds drifting away onto the horizon, suburbia with it's lost souls and myriad stifled dreams and a much gentler life of quiet desperation. I feel so removed and at peace when I listen to this album. It's not just music, it's art
(and I don't say that lightly.)
It's such a shame that they didn't make any more albums together. This is such a lost classic.
