Oui is the fourth album from Chicago's the Sea And Cake and their first after a three-year absence. It isn't exactly unruly. Marimbas and a hybrid of string arrangements and synthesisers float gently in and out the mix on "The Colony Room". Sam Prekop's gentle, restrained voice goes easily along with the flow, singing of dispossession and stasis on "You Beautiful Bastard". Everywhere, the graceful jazz-textured beats and vibes of percussionist John McEntire (Tortoise, Stereolab engineer) give the record that unmistakable Tortoise feel. Sof' Boy cartoonist Archer Prewitt seems to barely strum his guitar on "All the Photos"; painter Eric Claridge adds minimal bass accompaniment to "Afternoon Speaker". Just another fine Sea And Cake outing, then. --Jerry Thackray
