With Three Chords and the Truth, her 1997 debut album, Missouri-born Sara Evans not only wowed listeners with her superb vocal chops, but also boldly and unpretentiously staked claim to a neo-traditionalist style that suggested she'd done a lot of listening to Loretta Lynn and the late Tammy Wynette in her younger days. With Born to Fly, her third album, Evans continues her descent from the neo-traditional high ground and her move uptown. She makes it clear she's also listened quite a bit to the likes of Trisha Yearwood and Bruce Hornsby, whose "Every Little Kiss" she ably covers here. On the exuberant title tune and on fine country-pop ballads like "I Could Not Ask for More" and the lovely "Saints and Angels," Evans proves she can just as sweetly and deftly patrol the uptown territory as she can the down-home highlands, which she revisits on the steel guitar-adorned weeper "I Learned That from You." Though not every song on Born to Fly insinuates its way into listeners' imaginations like the above-mentioned gems do, this solid, ambitious 11-song collection stands as another feather in this gifted young singer's colorful musical cap. --Bob Allen

良質なポップカントリー

カントリーにちょっとポップ感覚を取り入れたアルバムです。カントリー然とした曲もあるのですが、ポップよりの曲が良いです。映画「メッセージ・イン・ア・ボトル」の主題歌I COULD NOT ASK FOR MOREやBRUCE HORNSBYの80年代のヒット曲EVERY LITTLE KISSが「ちょっとだけカントリー」なアレンジになっていて面白いです。カントリーファンだけでなくポップリスナーにも通じるアルバムです。

カントリーとしては悪くはないが、とりわけ気にいるかといえば、個人によると思う。
それは曲の構成やアルバムの作りから来ると言うよりも、エバンスの歌い方/歌唱の方法によると思う。

１ｓｔアルバムの『 Three Chords & The Truth 』（９７年）、２ｎｄアルバム『 No Place That Far 』（９８年）に続いて、本アルバムは２０００年にリリースされたサラ・エヴァンスの３ｒｄスタジオ・アルバムである。商業的評価を観ると、１ｓｔアルバムは地味であったが、アルバム・リリース毎にチャートを上げていき、本作ではＵＳではトップ１０入りを果たしている。全体的にほぼ前作を踏襲したカントリー・ベースのポップ／バラード・テイストだがパワー・バラードが印象的で志向性がカントリー一辺倒から幅を広げた印象がある。サラ・エヴァンス自身の手（共作）によるナンバーでは、先行シングルでトップ・チャート入りしたアップテンポなポップ・スタイルの「Born to Fly」、２年後にシングル・カットされたソフト・ロック・テイストの「I Keep Looking」、ポップ・バラードの「Let's Dance」、同じく「Show Me the Way to Your Heart」、コンテンポラリーなパワー・バラードの「Why Should I Care」、カントリー・バラードの「You Don't」などがある。このほかコンテンポラリー（パワー）・バラードで翌年にシングル・カットされた「Saints & Angels」、同じく「I Could Not Ask for More」、ブルース・ホーンズビーのカントリー・ポップ「Every Little Kiss」のカバー、カントリー・バラードの「I Learned That from You」、８ビートのポップ・スタイルの「Four-Thirty」など、前作よりコンテンポラリー／パワー・バラードのナンバーが顕著で幅の広い志向性が窺える。

Excellent CD, every song on it is great. There isn't a bad son on this cd at all. Sara Evans is my favorite female vocalist, unfortunately she is very underrated and deserves so much more recognition. I wish they would play more of her songs on the radio. If you like any of her songs you won't be disappointed with this cd. I definitely recommend this one, you can't go wrong!

this album blew me away when i first played it.sara evans is everything what country is about.quality vocals great lyrics with back up musicians.cannot accept negative reviews because every track except 9 and 10 are awsome.her cover of bruce hornsby (every little kiss) is better, and i paid a couple of quid for one the best albums out there.she also is very cute!

Well... what can I say? She does it again! Sara... where have you been all my life? (Or is it the other way around)? Those looks... that voice! Whoa! I'll say it again... this girl can sing! I think it's safe to say she has found all my (right) buttons to push! I keep trying to find a Sara Evans song I DON'T like and it isn't happening. And I'm glad it isn't happening. After 'discovering' Sara's "Restless" album and instantly falling in love with her and her to-die-for, incredibly sweet voice, I had to have more. Within days, "Born To Fly" was at my door and in the cd player. I must be a little behind the times. I can't say enough about this beautiful girl with the beautiful voice. She sings just so... I don't know... so effortlessly. It's as natural with her as one breathing. Real nice re-make of "Every Little Kiss". Real nice! And I love "I Could Not Ask For More". And did I mention the 4, 5 and 6 minute songs Sara does? No one does this anymore. It's great. (Everyone does the old 2 1/2 - 3 minute song and done). Sara jams with us a little. I love it! The more I can get of her, the better. Has Sara been given her rightful place at the top yet? With all the other superstars? Because from what I've seen so far, (and of coarse heard so far) she certainly belongs at the top of the list. I have a bit of an ear for these gals who possess such sweet, beautiful and unique voices and Sara is definately one of these gals. She is one of the most 'natural' singers I have ever heard. And beautiful too? Don't even get me started. This is a sweet girl. In fact, on "Born To Fly"... Sara is never sweeter.
