In an about-face that could alienate technophiles, this group of dance revisionists celebrate guitars and "real instruments" in the face of processed music. The Williams brothers and their mate Jim Goodwin first had a hit with the disco-charged "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)," but they became disillusioned with the Manchester scene, picked up guitars, and formed the Doves--a band determined to infuse raw emotion into their music. From instrumental opener "Firesuite," which showcases their rumbling, restrained guitar firepower, to the tumbling acoustic shanty "Sea Song" to the balmy Technique-era New Order rocker "Catch the Sun," none of the album's 11 tracks bears any real resemblance to any other (and, in this rare instance, that's a positive). The Doves have produced an outstanding debut album in Lost Souls, alternately melancholy and uplifting, sparkling darkly with charged atmospherics. --Mike Pattenden

全体を通して退廃的でダークな雰囲気が漂っており、dovesが描く独特な世界観に引きこまれます。
夜に一人で聴きたい。そんなアルバムですね。

特に「rize」と「Catch The Sun」がお気に入り。
Catch The Sunは退廃からの希望を感じさせるメロディ。サビのキーボードが気持ちいいです。

どのアーティストにしても独特の雰囲気というものは持ってしかるべきものだが、ダヴズのこの1stから感じられる雰囲気は少々特殊だ。どの曲もなんだか悲しげなんだもの、アップテンポなものまで。苦労人の哀愁ってやつだろうかねぇ。
ダンスミュージックとは言い難いが、ノイズやキーボードの使い方から考えれば一般的に言われているUK内省型ギターポップとも違う。表現の仕方に戸惑ってしまうがレディオヘッドやコールドプレイなんかが好きな人には是非聴いてもらいたい。特に「KID A」が好きな人はハマるかも。
ライヴはとっても楽しいんですよ、彼等。

Avevo letto su varie riviste grandi cose a proposito di questo disco, che mi ero perso all’epoca della pubblicazione, ben 24 anni or sono. Bisogna dirlo: le lodi erano stra meritate. Superb debut album which demonstrates Doves' ability to create ambient sonic music whilst still sounding commercially interesting. The opener 'Firesuite' kicks things off very nicely whilst 'Here It Comes' is very catchy. Other highlights include the Radiohead influenced 'Sea Song', lovely ballad 'The Man Who Sold Everything' and the punchy guitar-heavy 'Catch The Sun. If, like me, you missed this LP first time round then give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

The Doves, groupe insuffisamment connu, y compris des initiés, fut un trio qui dans sa discographie créa un chef d'oeuvre : "Lost Souls". Il n'est pas courant d'écouter un album dont toutes les plages vous paraissent fascinantes, envoûtantes. C'est le cas avec ce disque. Du premier morceau instrumental, d'une puissance inouïe, aux ballades à la violence contenue en passant par des morceaux à la structure pop plus conventionnelle, mais dont l'émotion transpire à chaque note, notre oreille se comble de ce délice sonique. Car c'est tout la singularité de cet album : il nous emmène là où la pop ne trouve guère droit de citer : l'émotion. le paysage sonore dessiné nous entraîne dans des élans de force, de compassion, de tristesse. La production est tout simplement superbe et les idées sonores émaillent l'écoute qui devient une source de plaisir immense.Il est rare de pouvoir déclarer qu'un disque est sans défaut, parfait (y compris les photos de la jaquette qui sont superbes). C'est le cas ici. Que justice soit rendu à The Doves et que quelques chanceux puissent découvrir leur musique.
