1979年のLP“This Heat”発表以前、1977年にBBCのジョン・ピール・ショウに全2回出演した(録音は1日のみで全て行われた)際の音源を収録したもので、1996年に正式に発表されている。“Horizontal Hold”、“Not Waving”、“The Fall Of Saigon”は彼らの最初のLP“This Heat”に、“Makeshift”は2枚目のLP“Deceit”に収録される曲だが、この時点では細部のアレンジが異なる部分も多い。テープ録音を実際のライヴ演奏に合わせて活用する、という手法はこの時点ですでに大々的に行われている。

2 BBC Sessions recorded in 1977 for the John Peel radio show, which must have brought This Heat to my ears in the first place. A favourite then, and they still are now. They absolutely stand the test of time. Unlike "Live 80-81" which is of poor recorded quality & solely for the most loyal of fans, this album comprises 2 BBC sessions and the recording quality is as good as you would expect. Side A is session 1 (28 Mar 1977) with 3 Tracks which later appeared on "This Heat" in 1979. These versions are equally valid, longer, and with interesting variations, esp. "Horizontal Hold". Side B, session 2 (26 Oct 1977) has 5 tracks, one of which, "Makeshift Swahili", featured in "Deceit" (1981) but this version has many interesting tapes, background voices adding more colour & context. The other 4 tracks are purely on this album making it a valid release in its own right. It is right up there with the best. Often described as, Industrial, Noise, Musique Concrete, Tapes (all true), I would also add Intelligent & Political ("Deceit" in particular) so I see links from Henry Cow and onto Nine Inch Nails.
This Heat is like a complicated art masterpiece.. They express different kind of feelings through bits and pieces of textured sounds. Using atmospheric soundscapes along with robotic electronica backed by an abtstract guitar and a fuzzy fat bass. With loud screchin' grinding noises they manipulate moods in a way no band has done it before. Sometimes it can be cool and wonderfull but at times they can take you to the darkest of places not comfortably at all. And that is why this music is great, it is honest and beautifull as it can be rude and ugly. This band started in the mid 70's and were quite original artsy musicians. Made available are live recording sessions and it is a very interesting spin. The devil is in the details you just have to be the listener and absorb the trip.
