Recorded in Europe during October 1975, The Tenor Giants Featuring Os car Peterson stars Zoot Sims and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, two of the most dura ble and idiosyncratic stylists jazz tenor has known. At first sight it was an un likely pairing: Sims's urbane, wryly oblique approach seemed worlds away from Da vis's customary visceralism--as far, indeed, as Lester Young was from Coleman H awkins, each player's respective master. But the contrast is superficial only. B oth were incapable of not swinging, even at the gentlest tempi; both in their di screte ways were instinctive melodists; and on these occasions both fed joyously off the superb support tendered by Peterson, bassist Niels Pedersen and Louie B ellson on drums. Highlights include a rollicking "The Man I Love" and the closin g "Groovin' High", a most imaginative reading of "Tangerine" and two masterly ba llad showcases, "My Old Flame" (Sims) and "Don't Worry About Me" (Davis). Both t hese wonderful tenorists are no! longer with us, which is reason enough to purchase; another is that for some we ird reason Pablo did not issue it at the time--which means that this CD is not o nly a brand new release but a real find. --Richard Palmer
