Curvatia's creators, Spacek, are based around the core collective of Steve Spacek (vocals) Edmund Cavill (guitar) and Morgan Zarate (drums). Even though they've only released two EPs, the South London trio are already being adorned with the kind of praise usually only reserved for bands once they're a few albums down the line. So what's the fuss about? In truth the praise is well deserved because Spacek are indeed pretty special, succeeding in a truly idiosyncratic cross-pollination of hi-tech soul, otherworldly R&B, futuristic hip-hop and off-kilter electronica. A strange combination maybe, but it works. An effortless sound that just shimmers and slides, interrupted only partially by the shuffling rhythms, stumbling beats and infectious, indefinable quirk that sets one tune apart from the other. Take the razor-sharpened beats and gently bumping hip-hop of "Eve", the sweeping cinematics of "How", the smooth, sassy spaciousness of Curvatia, the mistuned off-kilter soul of "Act for You" and the charming acoustics and simplistic beauty of "I Have a Daughter that Sings". All of which share the breathy, languorous vocal narratives of Steve Spacek and belie their obvious love for melody and left-of-centre form. This is a truly accomplished and irresistibly moreish album. --Found Sounds
