そんな一枚でした。

私は、毎月、２０枚前後CDを買っています。
いちいち一枚一枚、丁寧に聴いている訳ではなく、いつも、食事しながらとか、テキトーに聴いてます。

当初は、「まぁ、良いんじゃない？」位の感想でしたが、聴き続けるうちに次第に、（う〜ん！これは・・・）と思い始めたから、不思議です。
何回聴いても飽きない、既存のどの音楽とも微妙に違う、ポップさの中にも、微妙に屈折した、雰囲気が漂い、どじょうの様に障害物をするすると通り抜けていく様な、それはある意味、どんなジャンルにも属さない事を意味します。（完全に主観ですが・・・）何とも形容しがたい音楽です。

完全に適当に買った一枚ですが、こういう出会いがあるから、適当に音楽を買うのを辞められないのかもしれません。

XTCのアルバムは新しいほうから逆に古い方へと聞きすすんでいったクチなのですが、ここですごい名作にぶち当たった感じがしました。アルバム的にはNonsuchが一番好きなのですが、このSkylarkingが二番目に好きなアルバムです。１−２曲目は歌詞がエロい感じがするのですが、全体的に音、ムード、歌詞はばつぐんに美しく、時代を感じさせない普遍性がそこにあります。季節、自然、天気のなかに人がいる・・・というモチーフの曲が多く、XTCは本作では太古の昔から流れる自然のリズムみたいなものを志向していたのでしょうか？！彼らの超現代的な音楽観とその辺のニオイがよく融合したすばらしい作品だと思います。XTCをベスト盤しか聞いたことがない人には、まずこのアルバムをお勧めします。

色々と語られることが多いアルバムだが、純粋に音楽として聞くならば、XTCのアルバムの中で一番ポップな作品だと思います。それも非常に濃厚な味わいのUKポップスを最初から最後まで堪能できます。お勧めは1曲目から3曲目。曲の切れ目がほとんど無い連続した曲の並びが格別。1曲目は、まだ露の残るちょっと湿った朝のような雰囲気。2曲目は日が昇って少し気温が上がってきた草原。3曲目は日差しが強くなってきて木陰の心地よさ。もちろん、歌詞は相変わらずのヒネクレた内容ですが。
このアルバムが好きな人はThe Divine Comedyの作品も好きかもしれません。こっちも濃厚UKポップスです。

10年来のXTCﾌｧﾝだったが、唯一、これだけは持ってなかった。なぜかっていうと、10年前僕にXTCを教えた友人が、これを大嫌いで、一番つまらないから期待するなっていいつつ貸してくれて、そのときはやっぱりつまらなかった。その当時は、僕はHM/HR一辺倒で、攻撃的ｻｳﾝﾄﾞばかり追い求めてたんだが、XTCは、ｻｳﾝﾄﾞ面での攻撃性は少ないが、尖った感性が、HM好きな耳にも十分刺激的だったし、凝った展開も、ﾌﾟﾛｸﾞﾚも好きだった自分にｼﾞｬｽﾄﾌｨｯﾄした。当時のお気に入りは、「ｵﾚﾝｼﾞｽﾞ・ｱﾝﾄﾞ・ﾚﾓﾝｽﾞ」や、「ﾄﾞﾗﾑｽ・ｱﾝﾄﾞ・ﾜｲﾔｰｽﾞ」、「ﾌﾞﾗｯｸ・ｼｰ」など、尖った感性とﾎﾟｯﾌﾟｾﾝｽがかみ合っているような、かみ合っていないような、その緊張感あふれるｻｳﾝﾄﾞだった。そこへいくと、この「ｽｶｲﾗｰｷﾝｸﾞ」は、当時は、甘ったるくて気の抜けた炭酸飲料みたいで、どうにも気に入らなかった。唯一好きだったのは、ﾎﾞｰﾅｽﾄﾗｯｸの「ﾃﾞｨｱ・ｺﾞｯﾄﾞ」で、これは、異様なﾃﾝｼｮﾝと美しいﾒﾛﾃﾞｲがかみ合った屈指の名曲と、当時も今も思う。しかし、ふと思い立って、今、10年ぶりにこれを聴いたらどう感じるかと、入手してみた。あれ！こんなによかったっけ？こんなに自分の趣味や感性は変わるものか。1曲目の「ｻﾏｰｽﾞ・ｺｰﾙﾄﾞﾛﾝ」からして、凝ったﾘｽﾞﾑと幻想的なﾒﾛﾃﾞｨが絶妙に絡んで素晴らしいし、ﾗｽﾄの「ｻｸﾘﾌｨｼｬﾙ・ﾎﾞﾝﾌｧｲﾔｰ」まで、はっきりいって、嫌いな曲はない。ただ、決定打的な名曲というのは、上述の「ﾃﾞｨｱ・ｺﾞｯﾄﾞ」以外はないというのが、欠点といえば欠点。この後出された、「ｵﾚﾝｼﾞｽﾞ・ｱﾝﾄﾞ・ﾚﾓﾝｽﾞ」こそが、この作風、「ﾌﾞﾘﾃｨｯｼｭ・ﾛｯｸの域におさまらない、ﾒｼﾞｬｰｻｳﾝﾄﾞとXTCならではの尖った感性の融合」を完成させ、ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ全体で捨て曲なしでありながら、要所要所に、必殺の決め曲を配置した、完璧な作品であることは、間違いないと思う。しかし、この作品は、これはこれで、やはり素晴らしい。ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ一枚で一つの世界というか、一つの風景を、いろんな視点で描いているような、ここでしか味わえないｻｳﾝﾄﾞがある。

２０数年前に教えてくれた友達に感謝しなくては、、。
毎年５月くらい〜夏あたりまで無性に聴きたくなる時があるような気がしてきた（笑）
XTCは大好きでアルバムは全部持ってるけど、最初に聴いたコレが一番好き！
たまに思い出したように聴くとまたそこから一時期ハマッてしまい、
幻想的な世界に浸ってしまう。

プロデューサーのトッドラングレンも凄く好きなんだけど、とにかくこのアルバムは
神がかっています。アンディー曰くトッドは２時間でアルバムのミックスダウンを終わらせたとか。。
当時、トッドファンのデイブを除くメンバーとトッドの間は相当険悪ムードだったみたいだけど
アルバムとしては最高です！（後にアンディーもこのアルバムを気に入ってると言ってたし）
こんなアルバムが聴きたくていろいろ手を出したりしたけど、僕にとってやはりこのアルバムの代わりは利かなかった。
ビーチボーイズの名作、ペットサウンズでも。。当たり前か。

無理だろうけど、またXTC復活してくれないかなあ。

当時も凄い衝撃を受けたアルバムです
曲のクオリティもアレンジも最高なので〜是非聞いて欲しいですね

彼らの音世界の素晴らしさは誰もが認めるところでしょう、このアルバムも同様です。ポッブなsweetさとひねりの効いたシャープさとが絶妙だと感じます。『Grass』がジャケのイメージでしょうかのどかな草原と虫の音と凝ってると感じます。美しいアルバムでした。

商品説明には、from USとあり、曲順も、商品説明の英文レビューも、US盤のものと思われるのですが、届いたのは曲順が違う（"Dear God"がボーナストラックとしてラストに入っている）UK盤でした。カスタマーセンターに問い合わせたところ、商品説明にある内容のCDとの交換は難しいとの事でしたので、返品することにしました。個人的に、リリース当時、レコードで聴いた、桃源郷のようなアルバムのなかで暗く沈んで行くような"Dear God〜Dying"の流れがあるUS盤の方がしっくり来ていたので残念です。もちろん、アルバムの内容自体は星５つです。

Si dice essere il capolavoro di xtc. Bello vibrante ma troppo todd rundgren. Gli xtc li preferiamo in versione raw. Meglio secondo me English Settlement vero album imperdibile del gruppo.

Folks, SKYLARKING is XTC's high moment--whether you like it or not. I happen to like it, because it's so rich in complex arrangements, is pastoral, emotional and can trigger my imagination. It doesn't get more alternative than this release from 1986. This album puts you into a certain frame of mind and mood right from the beginning with "SUMMER'S CAULDRON", as birds are chirping, etc. The song transitions into "GRASS", which is a nice continuation of the previous song.This album has so much to like, as the melodies are upbeat, as well as down at times, which adds to the appeal. ANOTHER SATELLITE is another favorite of mine, with its cool beginning. There's a little jazz thrown in with THE MAN WHO SAILED AROUND HIS SOUL. Andy Partridge is one exceptional musician and lyricist, as is Colin Moulding. These two are unbelievable on this album, and one will quickly come to appreciate the awesome musicianship that is featured. What I appreciate the most about this release is how daring these guys were to make an album that sounded NOTHING like any previous releases, or future releases. I'll admit that it took me 3 run-throughs before I really started to like it. I love the acoustic work on this album, as it's rich, pure and relevant. A song that's a real treat is "SACRIFICIAL BONFIRE". This song has a ritual-like sound to it, and features the sound of fire burning for good measure.Colin Moulding was probably crinkling some paper for the fire sound!!! The vocals and harmony for this song almost sound like Greg Lake of ELP on this song, along with Roger Daltry of The Who. Of course, the controversial "DEAR GOD" is a fan favorite, and puts an exclamation point on an album that's deserving of high praise for being ahead of its time. Rolling Stone lists SKYLARKING as #48 in their top 100 albums of the 1980's--not bad at all. A lot of people prefer the ORANGES AND LEMONS/NONSUCH sounds of XTC, or they prefer the earlier stuff (new wave, punkish) from the late 70's. I'll admit that ORANGES AND LEMONS and NONSUCH, with their radio-friendly popish melodies and steady beats are tremendous, but SKYLARKING is an album that is much more sophisticated. It is rich in complex arrangements, is pastoral-sounding, and has that catchy sound that gives it an identity all its own. It follows a theme of changing seasons, etc. The whole Todd Rundgren thing is a bit overstated and has little to do with the success of this album. Sure, mixing and arranging helps, but this album is about 3 talented guys who weren't afraid to put out something different. This album put alternative music of the map. This is a must-have for any fan of XTC, and a good starter album for newcomers. If you like quirky yet rich and eclectic sound with outstanding lyrics, then this album will not let you down. 10/10

Fantastic album from XTC, and an absolute gem. At the time I understand Andy Partridge fell out over the production of this, apparently. Personally I think it is an outstanding album - and the production is too. There is not one bad track on this and each track has its own unique character. And it is that character which is so cool about good XTC albums, the fact that the musicians can play amazingly well and manage to hold their own with such a diversity of style. Quite often with bands, and particularly I find with many new wave outfits the later albums are very disappointing simply because a band loses direction or sticks to one style and becomes boring but not this later collection from XTC, and I guess that is because of, and in part the ability of the musicians, and of course the song-writing to be so confident in exploring a diversity of musical style. I think Andy Partridge described this album as something similar to 'Summer Baked into a Cake' when sometime later he chilled out after his disagreements over the production. Absolutely spot on description that. I love this album it is delicious. Stuff yer face. More tea vicar...

I cannot really add much to the previous reviews accept to say that Skylarking is amazing album. Andy Partridge and Co obviously have a very good taste in music as the influence of the Beach Boys and the Beatles is very apparent in this album, which has to be XTC's finest. If this album is news to you, it is basically orchestrated pastoral psychedelia, and is very strong in the melody department. On a final note i generally don't buy albums made in the 80's (they have a clinical air about them which hasen't really gone out of pop music since, but that's another argument for another day....)but this in an exception. A must for fans of 'nice' music.

Update June 2014:
FYI there is now a newer "corrected polarity" version of this album, released on both vinyl and CD. I think it sounds the best of all. I removed 1 star from this version and gave a 5 star rating to that one. The reasons are the same as below: you can find it for $10, it has the extra song and it's put in a better track order that flows great, the sound is better than any previous versions without being compressed (it's even less compressed than this remaster). "Corrected polarity" refers to a sound fault, something wired backwards that altered the sound in a bad way that was not intended, that was a not caught before the album was originally released. That is how it went out and how we all heard it, with the fault. This remaster is of that "faulty" mix. The "corrected polarity" version fixes the fault and it definitely sounds better, IMO. For more information, look up the other version and see my separate review of that.

Original Review:
I bought this for 3 reasons:

1) The remastering sounds great. Noticeably better than the previous released CD version, very clean and clear. It's louder but it still has lots of dynamics (i.e. not over compressed).

2) Includes the original version with "Mermaid Smiled" (but it also has "Dear God" at the end as a bonus track). I like having "Mermaid Smiled" (the track Andy Partridge wanted on, he wanted "Dear God" removed), but I prefer "Dear God" and feel that the CD doesn't flow as well with "Mermaid Smiled".

3) The $10 price was too good to pass up.

This is a phenomenal album that every XTC fan should have, as well as any collector of classic rock/pop music albums. The only thing I dislike is the booklet because everything is too tiny and I need a magnifying glass to read it. The previous booklet had more pages and larger font. However, it's only lyrics and credits anyways. Enjoy the music!
