ビョークのプロデュースもしたことで有名になったマシュー・ハーバートの本人名義サードアルバム。

マスターズ・アット・ワークなどの作品を除くと、色気のあるハウスミュージックが耳に入らない昨今、ハーバートにもっとがんばってもらいたいところです。

日常にある音や、何かと何かと打ち付けた音を加工して上モノやらビートやらのための音色にしてしまうという話ですが、そのエピソードからシュトックハウゼンを思い出しました。

今シュトックハウゼンが生きてたら、絶対ハウスにはまってると思うんだけどなぁ、なんて話はさておいて、クラシックのリスナーをもうならすことのできるハウスを作り続けていって欲しいところです。

国内盤は残念ながら出ていないものを、物凄い話題になりましたね。
クラブでは掛からなくても日々の生活を飾ってくれるようなCDです。
この人の音楽、とにかく耳ざわりが気持ち良い。

世界一信頼できるＤＪ、ジャイルスピーターソンが絶賛し、昔はあのビョークのプロデュースまでしていた天才マシューハーバートの本人名義での3rdalbum。
別名義も何個かあり、名義ごとに違った音楽をやっている彼ですが、今まで出した彼の作品の中で僕はこのBodilyFunctionsが一番好きです。
本人名義では基本的にハウスミュージックをやっていて、これがハーバートの中では一番聴きやすいと思うので、これからハーバートを聴いてみようとしている人はまずこのアルバムから聴いてみるといいでしょう。
よく雑誌などのメディアでは天才なんて言われていますが、まったくそのとうりだと思います。彼のやっている音楽は、音楽の１つの完成形だと思わせるほど洗練されていて無駄がありません。無駄な音はなく、ビートはカットアップされているのに、曲は軽くなく、むしろ重たいです。さらに彼自身がジャズフリークなだけにジャズの要素も多分に入っているし、オシャレでもあります。
さらにこのアルバムはメロディーラインがきれいな曲もあり、ボーカルを務めている彼の奥さんの声も絶品で、もう言うことなしの名作です。おすすめの曲はやはりシングルカットもされた、leave me now とAudienceです。もう名曲中の名曲ですので是非聴いてください。
また、彼はプリセット音を使わないことで有名で、彼の使っている音はすべて彼自身が自分で作った音なんです。新聞紙を破った音やコップを叩いた音など、日常の音をサンプリングし、それを曲で使っています。
そうゆうことを注意しながら聞くと彼の音楽をより楽しめます。
とにかくハーバートは最高です。聴くべきです。このアルバムが気に入ったら他の作品も聴いてみるといいでしょう。どのアルバムもはずれなしですよ！

今までハウスはあまり聞かなかったのだけど、
初めて買ったこのハーバートの作品は絶品。
ジャジーなテイストがとにかくオシャレ。
音の一つ一つが際だち、
ビートを操る感覚が素晴らしい。
彼の奥方ダニ・シシリアーノのボーカルも
すごすぎ。
聞き易く、それでいて深い、
大人が聞けるハウス・ミュージックです。

そこここ方々で超好評のHerbert作品、前々から聴いてみようと思ってて遂に手に入れて聴いてみたが、たしかにスゴイ。んん～まだ悟りきれてない部分も含めてかなりスゴイ。何故でしょう、彼の作品は初めて聴いたはずなのに、もの凄くなつかしい感じでウットリしちゃいました。うん、この懐かしさは一人で踏ん張っても絶対に引き出せない類の心理要素。何か忘れてるんだけど、何を忘れてるかも忘れてるような人に最適なこの作品。もう失ったと思い込んでたものが、まだ自分の中にあったことを再発見みたいなそんな稀有で貴重な気分にさせられる作品です。
この一品を聴いて個人的に感じたことは、このHerbertというアーティストは坂本龍一のように確かなスキルを確立していながら、さらに半端ない数の引き出しを持ってる類のツワモノで、それを小出しに小出しに織り交ぜて出してくるところが悔しいほどに心地いい。いい曲を創りたいあまりに音楽の本来の楽しさを見失っちゃうということは、音楽に限らず各界の表現者の悩みの種だが、この一品には、子供が野原を駆け回るような無邪気な音楽に対する喜びみたいのが染み込んでて、スゴクいいです。
部屋で聴くにも、寝起きに聴くにも、寝る前に聴くにも、ドライブで聴くにも、誰かと聴くにも、とにかく重宝な類の秀作ここにありけり。心の肩こり解消が必要な人には最適です。

Matthew Herbert's been around for a long, long time. From house to jazz, the certifiable 'king of samples' as I for one would call him has never been short on creative themes and approaches to music. He's about as open minded as they come in that regard and he bends to different moods and themes. He's always dabbled more into the house side and his tracks have appeared on loads of different albums and compilations over the years - either as Herbert or one of his many pseudonyms, such as "Doctor Rockit" - a name with which he released "Cafe De Flore". That song would be popular on many compilations as well, including Hotel Costes, and remixed well by Charles Webster. "Bodily Functions", the album here was released on Berlin's Studio !K7 - the same label that has releases by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Nicolette, Shantel, Vikter Duplaix, Ursula Rucker and loads of others. But maybe most famously they're the label behind the highly respected "DJ Kicks" series which has had featured Rockers Hi-Fi, Thievery Corporation, DJ Cam, Daddy G, Truby Trio, and many more.

In Bodily Functions, what I really liked about this album was that he aimed for a real organic sound in every essence of the word. And while sampling was heavy, it wasn't as gimmicky as some other releases I've seen - he had a vision of where he wanted to go with them and the genius was in it's spontaneity; what exactly were they? From whispy vocals to different themes, states of mind and even trauma to the body. Even the effects in the song are largely human. Some of the highlights to this one include "It's Only", with nice subtle horn work and a pretty nice beat that drops. I also liked "Foreign Bodies", with loads of samples. "Suddenly" is an eery song with a sick beat to it that has an excellent piano focus. The singer is outstanding. In a similar mode to "Suddenly" is ""Leave Me Now", which is an uber deep-house track. Wonderful vibe there - a song that at the time was aching to be remixed. Other songs I enjoyed were "The Audience" which sees the album end, "Addiction" which is actually quite emotional, and last but not least I really loved "I Know" - which was easily the jazziest of the tracks there. That one fit into the time-frame of this album perfectly - not quite pure 'jazz', not quite 'acid jazz', not quite 'jazz-house'. It's like a combination of all three with a twist of electronica blended in. Really wonderful song - though it kind of felt like he was proving something with it.

I recommend this album. I love it. It's moody, it has a considerable amount of thought put into it (that is, maybe more than a lot of albums) and is just quality. I'd really rate it at about a 4.5 but with so many of the songs being quite enjoyable to me and consistent, and that I couldn't list what I liked about the songs or mention others I did enjoy ("About this Time Each Day", "The Last Beat") I'd round it up rather than down. But this is a darker album, so it's not one that will 'wake you up' and pump you full of energy. Maybe odd to say for an album with a decent dosage of house, but in terms of 'chillout' and reflection, it's perfect. But it is perfect for a rainy day. Definitely give it a listen. And if you like it, you may also like music from Jay Denes "Naked Music" label. And of course check out other !K7 artists though this one is quite unique.

There is something profound about the sounds on this album.

I bought this album not knowing what I was getting myself into, and I have found myself listening to it over and over. Sometimes when I buy an album, I do so because I want to hear one of the craziest musicians out there (such as Hiromi). Other times, I know that I want to hear some calming jazz (Beyond the Missouri Sky by Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden). Herbert doesn't seem to claim to be anything. The music doesn't seem overly eager to tell you something, but you listen closely anyway. It isn't overstated in any way. As a musician, it's often hard to hear an album without thinking about its technical parts... how hard a solo might be or how well a vocalist can stay in tune while perfectly enunciating. This is the first album I've heard in awhile where I can let that all go and just... LISTEN.

This album might be so easy to listen to because it is one of the best engineered albums I've ever heard. It might be the natural growth of each song, complete with detailed branches of seemingly random but intentionally well-placed sounds that take your mind for a ride. I haven't quite figured it all out yet.

I can't really describe this album beyond that. It's all fuzzy to me, but I will listen again and again anyway.

This was my first Herbert album. I'll be back for more.
