Brooklyn's own jigmastas (DJ Spinna and MC Kriminul) have consistently laced the hip-hop netherworld with noteworthy 12" singles (check the criminally underrated "Lyrical Fluctuation" remix featuring Pharoahe Monch , Mos Def and Shabaam Sahdeeq, among others). However, when you match Spinna's Jay Dee-like musical eclecticism with the skills of an average MC, the results are a bit disappointing. Luckily, Infectious gets by with a little help from their friends. Guest appearances by Sadat X, on the neo-Ice Age bashing "Don't Get It Twisted" (peep the tap dancer clicking sounds) and underground heroine Apani B Fly MC on "Apology Not Accepted" obscure Kriminul's shortcomings. "8 Million Stories" and the police harassment narrative "Hollar" (featuring wailing guitars from Vernon Reid of Living Colour fame) are worthwhile listens. But it's the contagious sped-up Brazilian vocal loop on "C.S.S." that ensures that Spinna's accolades will continue to pile up like Tupac-is-alive conspiracy theories. --Dalton Higgins
