With A Little Help From My Friends" この Beetles cover 、好み的には 別版収録の "Day Tripper" とか、特に "Fall on the hill" がサイコーの出来、それに次ぐという感じです。" So Many Stars" これ Natalie Cole のと同じ位好き、Stacey Kent もいいです、Diana Panton のも好きです。" The Frog" の歌詞は "Corocodo. Corocodocodo. Cerecedeng. Cerecedegedeng. Cisaingeng. Cisaingengeng. Cirikidzing. Cirikidzkidzing."

Sergio Mendes

SERGIO & BRASIL

Happiness, Sadness, Carnival and late night romance, all in the space of 30 mins - some of the best arranged music ever
Like Getz and Gilberto, Sergio Mendes popularized the bossa sound and went on to sell millions across the world, he should have been honored alongside the others at the recent olympic games.. 1963-1970 was an amazing time in music history when covers of hits were often in the charts the same years as the hits themselves (like Dusty's 'The Look of Love' here) and where people just started to listen to music outside of Europe/The US. Sergio road that wave but is often unfairly put in with the easy listening crowd, some of his songs would fit that mold but he was the master of arrangements alongside the like of Bachrach and could take the most basic song and turn it into something totally new and different. His covers of the Beatles are some of my all time favs. Sergio had been going a while before he started Brasil '66 and this was his third album with them and my favourite. From the moment I saw the stunning cover photo and hear Lani Hall's amazing voice you are hooked, the beautiful songs like 'So Many Stars' and 'Like A Lover' are classics to the more upbeat title track or 'Batucada' Many of his albums are only available on cd in Japan so great to see this released (plus picked mine up new for .49p!) Pick up 'Equinox', 'Crystal Illusions' and the most recently reissued 'Stillness' which has a more sober feel to it. Only word of warning, I saw Sergio a few years back and he had a rapper come on and ruin the Look of Love and other songs. I like hip hop but it didnt belong in these songs and just sounded foolish and out of place. Keep with these early records and you will be happy.

Timeless

I've always been grateful for the fact that (a) I (born in 1950) came of age musically during a period where radio was still experimenting and one could hear everything from, Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Roy Orbison, The Association, Streisand, Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds and countless others all on the same station (WLOF in Orlando in my case) and all within the same broadcast hour and, (b) I got to spend 30+ years in the music industry so that I was constantly exposed to new things and never became complacent and underexposed to new sounds/trends. So many of my age bracket think that rock/pop music ended with The Carpenters, Firefall and Led Zeppelin. I try to converse musically with my age peers but usually draw blank stares when anything recorded past 1975 is mentioned. With music programming and marketing the way it's been for the last 30 years I suppose that it's understandable but the reality is that anyone who reveres the Yardbirds or Zeppelin should be able to hear and enjoy the link between them and Tool and conversely, it's sad to think that a 16 year old hard rock fan today will probably never be able to open his/her ears to good contemporary and/or classic pop music like Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66.
Look Around was recorded during a time when musicians and composers were keen on experimenting with new sounds, rhythms and ideas and they had at their disposal a receptacle in "Top 40" radio that had not yet been completely taken over by marketing geniuses determined to narrow music into "focus group" packages so that they could sell more car insurance to the selected demographic. Although brief by today's standards (about 30 minutes total), there is truly not a bad cut on the album. Some of the selections might seem borderline schmaltzy to the uninitiated but a careful listen with uncover a wealth of timeless treasures. Starting with a playful arrangement of "With A Little Help From My Friends" to "Like A Lover" (seriously, name a better lyric than "...how I envy a cup that knows your lips, let it be me, my love..."), to the rhythms of "Batucada" and ending with the dream-like lyric of "Look Around", Mendes, along with a lot of help from lyricists Alan & Marilyn Bergman created a masterpiece in "Look Around". It sounds as fresh and vital today as it did 45 years ago which is the main criteria by which any truely classic recording should be judged. The first four '66 recordings are all essential but there is also a very nice 2 cd set import "The Very Best of..." that covers the best off of the seven A & M albums that feature Lani Hall, Janis Hansen and/or Karen Philipp.

Great Condition & Good Sound Transfer
Purchased Used and it was in great condition. Boo-hoo on the boosted rates for S&H. Makes any disc a 4 dollar+ disc now. :( Nice transfer & no "leveling or loudness" fatigue. Tambourines are not massively compressed etc. Some of the more recent greatest hits & recent releases are not my cup of tea. This edition sounds a little brash on some of the midrange response when played @ loud levels. A little boost on the bass EQ seems to balance & remedies that factor. A few tracks need more Bass boost than others. The fades on this edition are slightly quicker than the album versions. I think they do this to minimize noise transfer. I always turn down the percussion sections on the "Get by With a Little Help from My Friends" track. I'm sure a 24 bit transfer would give a warmer sound and cost quite a bit more, but this is enjoyable. All tracks are great. Nice artwork & label. JMO on this edition.

If you like the Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 and are looking for a great LP purchase, get this one.

Classic Brasil '66 sound and songs became alive on this LP version. If you like them and enjoy the nuances of Vinyl, (short of ever having the Four Sider released as vinyl which was their greatest hits), this has a lot of great songs that brings me back to when I heard them in LA at the Greek Theater in the mid to late 60's. The strings and orchestration on songs such a So Many Stars and Look Around as well as With a Little Help From My Friends or The Look of Love are the worth purchasing the LP alone.
