Michel Portal reaches into your soul with playful and reassuring tones. Everything he plays becomes more human and joyous, even his 'old' recording of Poulenc's clarinet sonata with Pascal Roge. With the baritone sax his depth is matched by his warmth. I liken his sensibility to that of Gong's Didier Malherbe. These virtuosic duets with an accordeon are great fun and full of ethnic and impish charm. The improvisations are simply sensational! I don't think that you even need to like jazz to enjoy this. You have a front-row seat in a delightful French cafe (Rome if you prefer) and two master musicians are entertaining you with wit, subtlety and sorcery! Five ☆ HUGE ☆ stars.

If you enjoy the musical stylings of Richard Galliano, this is for you. If more people didn't dislike accordions or music with substance, I wouldn't be surprised to hear some of these tracks more often.
