Got this after Jamie Cullum played the track Ishmael, which is excellent, from this highly regarded jazz pianist. Well produced and great piano playing, with tracks of different tempos, but was disappointed with some of the tracks, which lacked the African influences, instruments, and rhythms and atmospheres I'd expected from the title and thus it felt a little anodyne overall.

This is a beautiful album containing orchestral versions of some of Abdullah Ibrahim's most melodic compositions. The tracks are drawn from various albums dating back 25-years. The record was recorded in 1997. The strings add another dimension to the music. Ibrahim is joined by bassist Belden Bullock and drummer George Gray. The string orchestra is drawn from 20 members of the Youth Orchestra of the European Community. The album was produced, arranged and conducted by Daniel Schnyder. Schnyder is a classical music composer who was born in Switzerland but lives in New York City. He has written compositions for the New York based Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (one of my favorite classical ensembles). This is a very relaxing and enjoyable album.
Dollar Brand before he changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim is one of the all time individual jazz pianists of all time. He sounds like no other and it was Ellington who first helped him to become more noticed. His Cd output is overwhelming and this is a must have in any collection.
3.0Süßliche Wohlfühl-Musik, wenig afrikanisch
