Holmes' previous album to 'Adventure' was 'Partners in Crime'. 'Partners' had the hits 'Escape' and 'Him'.
'Adventure' had no hits, and from my understanding did not sell well. I have no idea why--such is marketing
or perhaps the tastes of a fickle public.
There are only two songs on the album that are average--everything else is exceptional. The title number
is beautiful. It's unusual without being weird. The orchestration and chord progressions are outstanding.
Another highlight is 'Cold', a song about how relationships can change quickly, especially when new.
The music again is different but accessible, with a close relationship to the lyrics.
Holmes doesn't seem to garner much praise for his singing, but I happen to think his voice has a full
texture, with sure intonation and subtle expressiveness.
'I Don't Need You' is both funny and plaintive. Holmes has a gift for expressing musically the emotional
places many of us have been.
Sound of this Japanese import CD is very fine and has real presence, as though it was recorded in recent weeks instead of 1980.
If your familiarity with Holmes is limited to 'Escape' (Pina Colada), 'Adventure' is a great way to get
to know his story songs.
Highly recommended.
