Paul Butterfield Blues Band

I was Born in Chicago, and I just gotta get a gun (and a copy of this anthology)

What's to review? But I shall make a fast attempt.
If you're a blues fanatic and/or with a bent towards, particularly, the '60s electric guitar rave-up
revivalists or later-generation purists (even artists that straddled hard rock, folk rock,
and the blues, such as Ten Years After I would almost
lump into this category, to some degree), like Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and Co., you will doubtless need and want
to own this wonderful collection, even if you already own the basic albums. This might
be "old" music to many (or even just unknown--I never heard any Butterfield or Mike
Bloomfield much (or, at all) growing up on LI NY in the 1970s on classic rock radio, that's for sure, so how would
I KNOW this music otherwise, other than later being schooled in it by other artists,
or via my own research, which the latter is really how I came to know them?,
but for some reason these days, I particularly respond to the blues, the real deal blues.
I keep thinking about something Roger Waters said about 20 years ago now, that he listens
to music for pleasure rarely, and when he does, it's almost always his blues sides. That
resonates with me more now than it did for me then, in my case having grown into a lot of this
music, since when Waters stated that, I wasn't schooled in it nearly as much.
Anything from the early masters like Blind Lemon Jefferson up to The Band's' champion Sonny Boy Williamson,
to Lightnin' Hopkins and John Lee Hooker, right up to Paul Butterfield, Clapton, SRV, Albert King,
Freddie King, Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, anything of the kind, so much more than most
"contemporary" pop or rock music, with some few notable exceptions. I don't know why,
it just has more of a realness to it and guts and balls than most of the new stuff,
then again, much of the "new stuff" isn't usually the blues, anyway. And I'm not knocking
it for that, just stating the point. Even Captain Beefheart, for me, has more staying
power and replay value than most of this new stuff. I mean, either his early more semi-
conventional "blues" material or the later even more wacky stuff.
But Butterfield is really more in the line of just some goodtime, gutbucket, loud and basic
Chicago blues power workouts. You don't expect anything pretentious here, and you don't
get anything like that, and are glad for it. Some nice long live tracks here and there on here, or at least one solid one,
at end of Disc One, (East West, a raga-blues-jazz fusion that goes on forever but in a cool way) and
otherwise it's just prime Butterfield both discs, with a nice concise booklet insert which
I haven't even had time to read the entirety of yet, but I will soon. I"d like to pick up the
new Mike Bloomfield box set as well at some point, which also looks essential. Anyway,
if you own no other Paul Butterfield band stuff, this anthology is a great way to start,
a great intro., at least, and the price is certainly right, new or used. So far the audio
sounds great to me, but I haven't really listened to this on my best "system", just a
Sony bookshelf, but even via that it sounded pretty clean.

As good as it gets

In the mid-60's there were two names in white boy blues that stood out -John Mayall in the UK and Paul Butterfield in the USA. It's easy to lay your hands on umpteen Mayal albums and collections, less so for Butterfield who was, arguably, the more authentic (by having racially diverse bands from the very beginning). Now, however, anyone interested in checking out Butterfield can lay their hands on this excellent introduction to this artist.
It perceptively creams off the best of his Elektra albums, presenting the tracks in chronological order which shows Butterfield and the band's development from its rootsiest blues to experiments with jazz fusion and raga. Like Mayall in the UK, he utilised a succession of great musicians: terrific rhythm sections including Jerome Arnold, Sam Lay,and Billy Davenport; hotshot guitarists and keyboard players including Mike Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop, and Mark Naftalin; and later a horn section which included David Sanborn; plus, of course, Butterfield himself as lead vocalist and the only harp player the band ever needed. The 24-page booklet includes an excellent account of the band's history, full track details, and a few photos.
Any complaints? Only Amazon's current excessive price. You can buy the download for far less but then you miss out on the booklet which is an essential part of the package, so I would recommend you do as I did and buy a copy from Amazon Marketplace. And buy it you should because it represents a pinnacle in one corner of modern music. This really is great stuff.

Le parfum acidulé des sixties
Walkin' by myself...
