ウォレス.ルーニーが60年代のマイルスのイタコ路線をはっきり打ち出したのは彼にとって良かったのか悪かったのかよくわからないというのが正直なところ。どんなにマイルス的なスタイルを踏襲してもやっぱりそこにいるのはウォレスだから。このバンドはニューヨークで生で見ましたが、むしろバスター.ウィリアムズやレニー.ホワイトなど実際に初期のエレクトリックマイルスのバンドに参加してたベテランの方が明らかに攻めの音になってるんですよね。この人、マイルスの呪縛から離れた方が良いのかも、って思うんです。あんまりカリスマ性のある感じじゃないから、何かちょっと弱い感じがしちゃう機がするんです。面白いんだけど。

本作はWallace Roneyの意欲作であり、冒頭のドラムとトランペットのデュエットとボイスから始まる。Wallace(tp)の他、弟のAntoine(ts)、妻のGeri(p,key)を中心とするキーメンバーから作り出されるサウンドは強くMiles Davisのバンドのサウンドの影響を反映しており、Wallace自身のトランペットのプレイスタイルもMilesと聞き違えるほど、ストレートでビブラートのない音色はMilesの強い影響下にある。2004/11月に彼自身のバンドとしての初ステージを東京bluenoteにて果たしたばかりだが、その日本での1stステージの後、楽屋に押しかけた私に、彼はMilesとの思い出を語ってくれた。その思いは本作にも色濃く反映されている。

Voilà trois semaines que j'écoute et réécoute cet album du trompettiste Wallace Roney sans vraiment pouvoir donner un avis tranché. Wallace Roney, pour celles et ceux qui ne connaîtraient pas, ou en auraient vaguement entendu parler, c'est ce trompettiste possédant une sonorité très (trop?) proche de Miles Davis (trompette incisive et lumineuse, sens de l'espace, pureté sonore, sans vibrato), au point d'avoir été maintes fois taxé d'imitateur et d'imposteur par ses détracteurs (rien que ça!). Il est vrai que le mimétisme est impressionnant et a de quoi agacer, à tort ou à raison. Bref, je peux comprendre ce genre de critique négative. Erik Truffaz (mouais) et Paolo Fresu (oui), dans un autre contexte, et d'autres esthétiques, quoi que proche de Miles là encore, n'ont-t-ils pas eux aussi essuyé les plâtres? Que leur importe : de toute façon, ils continuent leur route, leur petit bonhomme de chemin, sans se laisser gêner ou perturber par ces escribouillards et autres plumitifs qui pullulent sur amazon (j'en fais partie, forcément)... En attendant, No Room for Argument se présente comme un album concept. Une suite puisant dans l'histoire de la Great Black Music, ou se voulant dans la continuité de celle-ci, cherchant son inspiration dans A Love Supreme (oui, oui, vous avez bien lu, l'oeuvre de John Coltrane) ou Filles de Kilimandjaro (Miles, forcément...). Hélas, au fil des écoutes, c'est un disque beaucoup trop plein, bourré aux amphétamines, et quand viennent les claviers façon années 80 (Vangélis ou Jane Child), notamment sur Virtual Chocolate Cherry (déjà rien que le titre....) le bas blesse et c'est la déconfiture assurée. Pour le reste, il y a donc à boire et à manger, comme on dit trivialement. Car tout n'est pas mauvais dans ce disque.

the notes above by karl w. n. i agree with whole-heartily. therefore i can't add too much more except... this recording is not an effort to duplicate but to pay tribute; i think one has to remember that before saying anything (someone else) about roney sounding too much like miles davis. this is the point... to pay homage to the master and his players of the time; the early to mid 70's... pay homage to the sound the style and the attitude of the times (karl gets it but some not familiar with the era may not). ...herbie hancock, dave holland, john mcLaughlin, liebman, etc, who added to the uniqueness of those workshops, if you will... during that time. i do so remember... we were all knocked out when davis came out with these records as mentioned above and not forgetting 'tribute to jack johnson' as well. but, anyway these guys are so right on at capturing the spirit of that time. the tenor work; 'all' is superb on this recording; lenny white... good to hear the master again. i agree with karl (review above) this i think is the best jazz release of 2000. thank-you wallace for doing such a good job of paying tribute in such an original and creative fashion. sincerely... .. . mz
