I'm new to Pat Martino, this being only the second CD I've bought from him, after his debut "El Hombre". That is a sad admission, but not as bad as if I'd never bothered to check him out in the first place. My personal collection is getting pretty big, and my tastes are eclectic, so my interests tend to stray all over the place. As I have recently retired, however, I have much more time to play music and listen to it. My appreciation for jazz guitar music has exploded in recent years, and not only do I have lots of rock and roll, metal and blues, jazz is making a large dent in my collection as well.
I certainly had read about Pat Martino and lots of other players over time, but after checking him out on a youtube cut, I realized I was missing out on a true genius of jazz guitar, a man who was just a "kid" of 22 when he released his great debut "El Hombre", an album that rocks as much as it swings. So after researching and finding out that Joey Defrancesco was on this live album, I knew it would be a smoker, as I have two other albums with Joey D., "Like That" with Jimmy Bruno, which is fantastic, and sadly, "Relentless", the last album ever recorded by the late great legend Danny Gatton.
"Live At Yoshi's" makes me wish I'd been there. Pat did come to my home town some time back but I didn't know about it, and I regret not seeing him, even more now that I have a live set that is so hot I'm surprised fire marshals didn't close down the show. Serious health issues sidelined this great player for a while, but he plays with a vengeance here - fluid and masterful lines that show us how important it is to achieve the balance between noodling and playing jaw dropping solos that we can actually remember. Ditto Joey D. This wizard of the Hammond B-3 handles the bass lines, and like my other two albums with him on them, plays like he's got ten fingers on each hand. Always melodic, but I'll bet they have to put ice packs on the keyboard after he plays a set to keep them from melting.
"All Blues" is the one recognizable tune here - the Miles Davis deceptively simple classic that provides the backdrop for tradeoffs that are so hot it's ridiculous. The crowd on this CD goes nuts, and Pat and Joey feed off the energy and hand it right back.
Guitarists who know of Martino are no strangers to the talent of a player who is a great throwback to Wes Montgomery especially, but has a style all his own. Along with Montgomery's ""Live At the Half Note", long considered the greatest live jazz guitar album of all time, "Live at Yoshi's" is one smokin' album.

Top notch live trio jazz - but it does invite comparison with John McLaughlin’s classic 5 star ‘After the Rain’ album (also with JdeF, plus Elvin Jones on drums) and depending on your preferences possibly comes off slightly eclipsed by the latter. I think it’s down to styles - particularly on the parts of Martino and Hart who are much smoother in their delivery than the hard hitting Jones and distinctly powerful McLaughlin. Each to their own of course; both albums being very much at the top of this genre.
